Blurb: an Pierce is the chef and part owner of the hottest restaurant in Cincinnati, his chosen family is full of happy relationships, and the scruffy, snarky cop who has been haunting his dreams is one step closer to being in his bed. But everything comes crashing down when the past he narrowly escaped nine years ago comes to a deadly head.
Hollis Banner was enamored of Ian at first sight. He’s kept his distance, knowing the gorgeous, self-confident man is out of his league. Yet there’s no standing aside when Boris Jagger escapes a raid. Jagger’s world has been nearly destroyed and this time, the crime boss is coming after Ian and his friends personally.
Hollis will do whatever it takes to keep Ian safe as they escape to a safe house with a couple of Ian’s overprotective friends. And Ian finds himself in a race to unlock painful memories—memories containing information that could take down the very last of Jagger’s illegal operations forever.
Trigger warning: Flashbacks to abuse could be possible triggers for some.
Review: “He’d never seen such a group of men so devoted to each other, willing to give up anything and everything for one another’s safety and happiness. It was humbling.” -Hollis ~ Devour
Ian Pearce is the youngest of the Unbreakable Bonds men. He’s was saved and protected by Lucas Vallois, Ashton “Snow” Frost, and Rowan Ward. With the love and support of these men, Ian became an accomplished chef and part owner of a high-end restaurant. He’s matured so much as an individual, and there are times when he surprises himself at what he can do. Besides being a good friend to Andrei, Noah, and Jude, Ian has become a mentor of sorts. He’s also had his eye on an elusive detective.
From the start, Detective Hollis Banner has given grief to the Unbreakable guys, especially Lucas and Snow. He works hard, believes in justice, and has a snarky sense of humor. The first time he saw Ian Pearce, he was captured by his presence, but he’s always felt Ian is out of his league.
When Hollis’s undercover operation doesn’t accomplish the most important goal, to bring an end to Ian’s biggest fear, he finds himself in danger. Ian, Hollis, Noah and Rowe go into hiding to limit the group’s accessibility to their enemy. Being secluded gives Ian and Hollis a chance to be honest about their feelings. Opening up reveals all the hurt, pain, sadness and guilt that Ian has kept inside him, but Hollis is there to catch him and give him the love and strength to face his past. When the enemy’s threats become a reality, these eight men join together to fight and keep their family safe.
“But these men, they didn’t have to accept him. They had looked at who he was, the choices he’d made and deemed him worthy. And it felt damn good.” ~ Hollis
I have to mention that I liked Hollis from the very first book, Shiver, and he continued to make appearances in Shatter and Torch as well. I’ll always consider Mel as one of the Unbreakables; she broke our hearts and wherever she is, I’m sure she’s watching over her Unbreakable family.
The writing team of Drake and Elliott never failed to keep me wanting more throughout the Unbreakable Bonds series, and they saved the best for last. The series includes some of the most well written lines, filled with overwhelming emotion, and there’s also the humor to give readers time to breathe. This fourth and final novel takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The action, suspense and danger kept me on edge, never knowing where the enemy was going to strike next. No matter how many bumps in the road this amazing group of characters faced, they always had a strong sense of camaraderie. And, with some of the surprises in Devour, and for the series’ secondary characters, we are sure to see some spin-offs.
