Blurb: Who is the master and who is the slave?
In Rick R. Reed’s tortuously sexy short story, you might not always know. Fugue takes the brave reader into the dungeon playroom of a master and his boy. It’s the kind of place where “darkness skitters into corners, hiding in shadows where the walls disappear.” A boy is chained to the pipes along the ceiling. Hooded, he can only experience the sensations his master delivers with his whips, fingers, tongue…
But in the boy’s mind, a dream state takes him places even the master could not imagine…places where the established pecking order is turned upside down. As he’s being deliciously whipped, tantalized, and tortured, the boy takes a mental journey on a late-night train where his adventures are even more raw and erotic than what goes on in this very dungeon.
Come along for the Fugue…and answer for yourself the question: who is the master and who is the slave?
Review: Rick R. Reed writes an interesting short story that is sexy, intense and somewhat mysterious. Juxtaposing two scenarios against one another, we watch two interactions: one set on an L train in Chicago at night, and the other in a dank, dark basement. There is only one common denominator in both stories, and this is the man with the tattoo on his arm that says “fugue”.
But here is where the story gets its mysterious edge, for in one scenario, that same man is submissive and hungry for the young twink who appears to be a nameless sexual encounter; and in the other, he is the aggressor, the dominant, and the master wielding the whip. Who is this man, is it indeed the same man in both settings, and, if so, why the switch?
Fugue was a wild ride and left me with not only questions but also wanting more. The mystery man in question was fascinating, and even though the story contains probably less than twenty lines of actual dialogue, I felt that I not only knew who he was internally, but I also knew who the slave was in the basement. I felt the author managed to draw such realistic characters in a short amount of time. The prose portions of this short story, which were the bulk of the writing, were so gritty and well done I swear I could feel the heat of each moment these men were together. Not only was the story viscerally exciting, it also pulled me deep into their psyches and helped me understand what motivated them and drew them to each other. This was an earlier writing done by Mr. Reed, and you could tell in that there were a few times I felt the prose was just a tad bit purple and, perhaps, a bit overdone, but that really didn’t detract from the fact that this was an excellent short story that I truly wish he would evolve into a longer novel some day.
