Blurb: After twenty years of being away, Harlow has come back to his birth pack. Now in his early forties, he’s a doctor and ready to retire from human life in order to take his place in the pack. But the pack he left behind isn’t anything like what he comes back to. His older brother is the new alpha, and the pack that was once full of families is now little more than a harem of young wolves following his brother blindly.

The only one not afraid of his brother is his beta, Nathan, who stays to protect the others. Harlow brings with him the much needed hope Nathan has been searching for, but Harlow has to prove himself worthy of the position of alpha before Nathan will follow him.

Review: His Brother’s Beta was a delightful read from start to finish. I’m not sure why I’m in the short story mode right now, but the last few I’ve read have really hit the mark. I was able to complete this book in just a few hours, and it helped to pass the time in a wonderful way.

While sex was not a significant component of this story, barely even being hinted at, it was the pack dynamics and the character development that did it for me. The premise was so unique. An alpha who wiped out his own pack and turned local human men (barely men) into werewolves to create his own personal harem, set the stage for what Harlow, a long-lost brother, came back home to. Add to this a hot beta, Nathan, who is trying to protect the pack against the alpha’s savage leadership, and a lone original pack member who is all that remains from the main character’s childhood, and I found myself tearing through the book and wondering what would happen next.

As with any good book, I would have loved more. Definitely more of the physical aspect of the main love interest. But also a bit more of the tugs and struggles of the situation creating tension and angst. Again, not something I can reasonably expect from a short novella.

All in all, a lovely bit of writing. Perfect for a mid-day weekend treat.
