Blurb: They’re dangerous men. Absolute enemies. And totally hot for each other.
Will has never met anyone like Kit. He’s arrogant. Gorgeous. Lethal. The most expensive bodyguard money can buy.
And Will can’t seem to resist him.
A simple command in Kit’s cut-glass accent makes Will want things he’s never wanted, do things he’s never done. Their red-hot chemistry is off the charts.
Just one problem: Will has vowed to kill the billionaire that Kit is hell-bent on protecting.
And Kit has secrets, too—his own reasons for sacrificing his soul, piece by painful piece, to keep one of the worst men on earth alive.
Review: My only expectations going into this book centered on the high regard I have for Joanna Chambers’ brand of storytelling, and knowing that the odds were better than average I was going to come away from it happy, even though I’m unfamiliar with co-author Annika Martin’s work. I have to say I like the way the authors’ voices complemented their characters rather than each other, in Will’s harder American edges versus Kit’s polished English sophistication. There was never a moment in the dual narration where I forgot whose point of view I was in, which worked well given how different these two men are in nearly every single way.
And don’t even get me started on that cover…
In a twist on the saying, “With friends like you, who needs enemies?” Chambers and Martin go for more of a, “With enemies like you, who needs anyone else?” angle. Will and Kit may have a common target, but the end game is determined by their own individual objectives, and there are things that happened to each of them in the past that drives their anger, spurs their missions and, ultimately, fuels their lust. There is plenty of sexual tension arcing between these two men at every encounter—none of it unresolved. Frankly, they get right down to business in some ultra-sexy ways. This book is erotic from the start, and the pull that draws Will and Kit to each other frustrates them as much as it begins to fulfill a deeper need they didn’t realize was there until they come to understand the potential of its loss.
With them working at cross purposes—one working hard to kill the man that the other is working to protect—the logical solution would be for each of them to try and eliminate the other. When that doesn’t work (see: lust), the next logical step is to team up with each other, which creates its own set of problems, as you can imagine. These guys are both a little bit broken on the inside, and their attraction to each other provokes some questions they’d rather not address. Most especially when those questions begin to make them rethink their raison d’être.
I liked Will and Kit together, quite a lot, liked their chemistry and the constant frisson of tension between them. Of the two, individually, Kit was the more alluring to me, by far, but Will’s backstory added a touching note to his characterization. The suspense was drawn out nicely, and while the antagonist in the story came down to a sort of Occam’s Razor style of deduction, the betrayal added a nice gut-check to the climax.
While I wish there would’ve been a bit more exposition between the final chapter and the epilogue—more specifically, I feel it would have benefited Will’s arrival at his decision to go all-in with Kit had there been some narrative dedicated to him in the months between—that minor want aside, this one kept me turning pages until the end.
