Blurb: When Shawn’s best mate Dave breaks up with his girlfriend, Shawn tries not to get his hopes up. After all, Dave’s still straight, right? Wrong. Dave reveals he’s bisexual, and that pounding you hear is Shawn’s heart. He’s loved Dave for so long, but he’s not about to jeopardize their friendship by telling Dave how he really feels.
But when Dave discovers Shawn’s little kink, it opens up a whole new chapter for the two friends. Except Shawn can’t help but worry – if there was no kink, would Dave be there? And is Shawn brave enough to find out?
A standalone short story of lust, lace – and love….
Review: The idea for this book was very good, and I was very excited about reading it when I saw the blurb. While I enjoyed it a lot, I think it would have worked so much better as a full novel. It had so many opportunities for development, and we only scratched the surface of Shawn and Dave’s journey from friendship to relationship.
To start, there was not nearly enough communication in the book between the MCs. They had fears and insecurities, but they didn’t share them with the other. The lack of meaningful conversations made me feel as if the characters didn’t have a connection. We were told that they were really close, and very good friends, but that didn’t show in the story. They kept secrets and were afraid to open up. They didn’t talk about the important stuff that they were worried about, but buried them and hoped they wouldn’t matter at some point. In general, this story lacked development and conversations. There was not enough time for the characters to evolve, not enough time for them to digest their feelings, to come to terms with the new aspects of their relationship, to explore their shared kink and, finally, to communicate and discuss all that.
The sex scenes were pretty hot, and Shawn and Dave were great together, but there was something that canceled all that for me. Their first time together they decided that condoms were unnecessary between them, so they got rid of them. For me, this was a big issue, but for other readers it might not be, so I’m just giving you a heads up, and you can decide if you are comfortable with it or not.
A scene that I found weird is when they went to an underwear store where Shawn was allowed to try on items. Now, I don’t know if that’s a rule only in my country, or if it’s something that happens everywhere, but here you are not allowed to try on underwear, and you can’t return them after you buy them. Maybe that’s the reason I found what happened in the story to be extremely unhygienic instead of sexy.
A funny-weird thing is that Shawn was always appearing to be doing laundry. Whenever he was home, he was taking clothes out of the dryer and folding them. I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I found it pretty funny the third time it happened, and I realised there was a pattern.
I’ll say again that the idea for the plot and the main characters, along with their social circle (Shawn’s parents were great!), were very good, and a bit more time for the story to develop would have made a great difference. As it is, this is a hot little read with great potential that, unfortunately, and in my opinion, didn’t quite reach to the fullest.
However, don’t let my ramblings deter you from reading this one. It’s fun and interesting. The need for more communication can easily be overlooked if you don’t analyse the book too much. I just have a tendency to think about everything too much sometimes.
So, three stars from me and a wish that this will gain some length at some point in the future.
