Hi, everyone, welcome to The Mystery of Nevermore audiobook tour. We’re so pleased to have C.S. Poe dropping in today to chat about narrator extraordinaire, Derrick McClain, and how he carried off the perfect performance. And there’s even a blooper reel that proves it takes more than one take to pull it off! Enjoy and then be sure to check out the giveaway below.

Welcome, C.S.!

Hello everyone! I’m C.S. Poe, and welcome back to the third stop on The Mystery of Nevermore (Snow & Winter Book One) audio tour. We’re at The Novel Approach today, continuing the chat about narrator Derrick McClain’s work and how he brought my characters to life in ways I could only hope to imagine. If you’ve just hopped into the tour, you can check out the first two visits with My Fiction Nook and Sinfully Gay Romance!

(Be sure to check out the giveaway at the end. I’m offering one of my short stories at each stop, with Love, Marriage, and a Baby Carriage up today! A romantic comedy featuring penguin shifters, an accidental game of speed-dating, and one abandoned egg in need of love.)

For my third discussion, I’m waxing poetic about how Derrick handled CSU detective and unhappy boyfriend to Sebastian when the book begins— Neil Millett. I’ll admit, one of the biggest surprises for me since Book One and Two were published was how many people liked Neil. I received a lot of emails asking for him to get his own HEA. I myself never disliked Neil. He doesn’t deserve that! He’s a complicated, closeted guy who is trying to do what he thinks is best. But even if he does right in a situation, Sebastian just isn’t the man he needs in his life.

So when it came to the audio, my only concern regarding Neil was, if he’s given, for lack of better description, a villain voice, people who may have initially liked his character could be turned off. But Derrick managed to walk a wonderful tightrope of giving Neil a voice that was perfectly acceptable for his character, but that in the right moment, could infuriate you, thus lending a bigger emotional impact to the scene. I freaking loved Neil’s voice! It really made me fall in love with his complexities all over again.

Unfortunately, Neil isn’t available in Audible’s sample (still worth the listen though!) but the first scene between him and Sebastian is so good. Derrick made it such a bitter little argument that sets the stage perfectly for the emotional arcs woven into the mystery story.

“What’s going on?” I repeated. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m a cop, Sebby—“

“Don’t call me that.”

“What human heart? Why didn’t you call me?”

Before signing off, I’ll share the blooper reel me and Derrick put together if you’ve not yet seen it. It’s pretty funny! I mean, who doesn’t love a good blooper?

About the Book

It’s Christmas, and all antique dealer Sebastian Snow wants is for his business to make money and to save his floundering relationship with closeted CSU detective Neil Millett. When Snow’s Antique Emporium is broken into and a heart is found under the floorboards, Sebastian can’t let the mystery rest.

He soon finds himself caught up in murder investigations that echo the macabre stories of Edgar Allan Poe. To make matters worse, Sebastian’s sleuthing is causing his relationship with Neil to crumble, while at the same time he’s falling hard for the lead detective on the case, Calvin Winter. Sebastian and Calvin must work together to unravel the mystery behind the killings, despite the mounting danger and sexual tension, before Sebastian becomes the next victim.

In the end, Sebastian only wants to get out of this mess alive and live happily ever after with Calvin.

  4. What a fun video! I haven’t had an audiobook yet with Derrick’s narration, but I loved what I heard and would definitely want to. I’m probably 80/20 on visual books/audiobooks, but only because they take a lot of time, but I’m such a fan that if I had more hours in the day, I’d read more books that way. A great narration brings the book to life in a new way. Thanks for sharing with us!
