Review: Paul Auster and Vincent Taylor are finally doing it! They are getting married! But like true love, the course to the alter never runs true. There are bumps. Helena and the Homo Jock King continue to be deeply in love, much to Helena’s delight and chagrin. Daddy, from Jack It, has a boyfriend, and his nearly shy revelation will fill your heart. Mom and Pop Auster are overflowing with joy that their son is giving them a son-in-law they simply adore. Corey/Koree is along for the ride and casting sarcasms far and wide while encouraging Helena and Nana to be as zany as they have ever been. Nana and Johnny Depp are still finding ways to undermine every serious moment, and Johnny is still trying to convince the world Paul has been molesting him for years.
Michael Lesley returns to this series for its final (according to TJ) ride through the Arizona desert and into our hearts. Those familiar with this series and Lesley’s voice will stand and cheer. The humor of TJ Klune’s words is something everyone should experience, and they should experience them with Michael Lesley reading them—but this isn’t just a read; it is a performance. Every bit of the pathos and passion Klune gave us to finish this series comes rolling off the voice of this narrator. We don’t just hear the words with a voice this talented, we live them. You laugh when you should, cringe when you should, and ugly cry when Vince lays his heart bare for the love of his life. There could be no better voice to close this series. Naturally, it ended too soon. No one wants to say good bye to good friends, and no one wants a performance of this quality to end.
You may need to stop the audio a few times because people will stare when you roar with laughter and then sink into tears when you feel the true love between Vince, Paul, and their family. Armistead Maupin taught us we have a bio family and logical family. Klune gives us a logical family that doesn’t just work, it sparkles. By blood and adoption, this family is one everyone would want to be part of. OK, you may want to muzzle Johnny and spank Helena, but Lesley’s voice makes that a joyful thing as well.
Buy this audio. In fact, if you haven’t, buy all three. These books will never disappoint, no matter how many times you listen to them. Klune and Lesley lead with their talent and their hearts. The combination of the two is not to be missed.
