Well hello there! Thanks so much for letting me be part of your blog for a little while! All Wheel Drive is a book of my heart. It grew out of my longstanding desire to see characters in romance novels living with challenges that real life readers live with every day.

Physical perfection is certainly an awesome fantasy, and I enjoy books about athletes and billionaires and girls who are perfect 10s. But I have always enjoyed the story of the everyday hero or heroine. It kind of reflects the philosophy of my life, and certainly my marriage. Here’s a quote:

 “My wife is decidedly not perfect, but she’s perfect for me,” said my favorite romance hero—my husband. LOLs.

Three things I learned during the writing of this book that surprised me?

• There are a lot a generous people out there. Some are living with disabilities and some are caring for people who live with disabilities. They are willing to share insights with perfect strangers. (I hope that I handled sensitive subject matter in a respectful, healthy way.)
• The human body is an amazing, resilient machine. Our brains are fascinating. Neural plasticity makes it possible for our brains to reroute signals after a massive traumatic injury with often surprising results, but the body and brain together are nothing compared to the human spirit, which is limitless. I am awed by the people whose lives I peeked into for this book.
• The last thing I learned is how hard it is for someone who doesn’t live in a certain situation to write about it. You have the angel on your shoulder saying, “Don’t say anything controversial.” And you have the adversary on your other shoulder saying, “Dig deeper—find the pearls and the grit that caused them.” (I listen to both but I hope I never lost sight of the pearls.)

About the Book

Healey Holly is battered, depressed, and looking to go to ground in his childhood home. He wants to rent the garage apartment, but it’s Diego Luz’s place now, and the last thing Diego wants is to share it.

Diego is recovering too—from the accident that put him in a wheelchair and the death of his mother shortly after. Z.A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back. Pathologically disorganized and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends.
