When Riley shows up in his classroom one evening after school, they both remember that Riley has a detention session he failed to serve prior to graduation.
Review: Bad Boys Get Detention is a quick splash of sexy fun, making for a quick and enjoyable read. In this short story about a teacher and his once student, now teaching colleague, we catch a glimpse of the explosive attraction that can occur between two men. Chris is a respectable guy, loves his job, and won’t jeopardize or compromise himself, but once Riley, the star student who’d been his nemesis five years earlier, returns, now the rules have changed. Riley is no longer off limits, and, as it turns out, has ideas on living out the fantasies from his senior year.
What I enjoyed about this was how Mr. Erno managed to develop the history, allowing us to see Chris at the beginning of his career, and then flashes forward five years. When Chris is faced with his nemesis student, but now as a colleague, a new teacher in his very own department, Chris is unsure whether he can take the day-to-day frustration of dealing with his attraction and annoyance. He even contemplates seeking out a new job. All that changes when Riley shows up in Chris’s classroom to serve his detention, the one he’d earned on the last day of high school, five years earlier. The sex scene that follows is a brief but hot and satisfying experience, graphic enough to let us see exactly what Chris sees, to feel what Chris feels.
I was impressed with the way the author used two side-characters to drive the story along, creating colorful people who serve the purpose of getting Chris and Riley together. They are fun and fit nicely into the caricature of who they are supposed to be: a principal who amps up Chris’s resentment of Riley, and a departmental colleague who kindles the fire between the two men.
As a short story, Mr. Erno didn’t try to overdo character or setting development. It wouldn’t have been appropriate in a short read such as this. Instead, he offers us a snippet into the life of two men and allows our imagination to fill in the blanks about what might happen in the future.
