Welcome, Parker!
Q: Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing come from?
A: I’ve always loved to write. If I had to trace it back to why, it was the realization that I was gay and found out the world thought of gay people as the butt of their jokes. All you saw on TV were the swishy men who were there for a laugh or to be the next murder victim. Growing up it was a sucky experience, because you came to realize that you didn’t fit into this world of theirs.
So, I figured why not create worlds of my own? My first story, Free At Last, was about 130 handwritten pages. It told the story of Rusty and Grant (plus their Aunt Helen) who came together as teenagers, despite their peers. Grant was protective of Rusty, who had a crappy home life. Eventually that turned to love. My favorite character, though? Aunt Helen. She loved both boys unconditionally. She knew they needed one another, and helped them to understand that, too. In fact, Grant came out in class as a way to protect Rusty.
Q: What were your goals when you started Runner? Do you think you met them?
A: My goals… Hm. I just wanted to tell a good story about two men who find their way to one another, even though one of them would prefer to keep everyone at arm’s length (or several miles away). Matt, to me, was a broken man who was being held together by the things he cobbled into his life. Charlie was the one who had to show him there are other things out there for you to hold on to, plus to show him that love could be a reality for him.
Q: Have you ever co-written with someone before?
I co-write with the delightful K.C. Wells. We just finished the second book in the Secrets series (An Unlocked Mind). This is a book I’ve been dying for since I read An Unlocked Heart, because one character always stood out as needing a healthy dose of discipline. That was Alex’s brother, Rob. I BEGGED K.C. for his story, but until Collars & Cuffs ended, it simply didn’t fit. Now that Eli and Jarod have moved to London, we had a reason to revisit Rob’s story, and now he’s going to be taking on Vic.
Fair warning: Rob is not your typical sub. Bratty doesn’t even begin to describe him. And their story starts out in a very antagonistic sort of way. But through it all, Rob’s core remains the same, and it’s what Vic loves most about his boy.
Q: Tell us about your favorite character in a book (yours or someone else’s).
A: I’ve got a lot of favorite characters. Dante from Again by Mary Calmes, Sam Kage from A Matter of Time by Mary Calmes, Rand from Timing by Mary Calmes, Web from Frog by…wait, are you noticing a pattern here? Yes, I love many of Mary’s characters.
However, for the sake of something different, I’m going to go with Wes from Silvia Violet’s Wild R Farm series. I love shifter books, and this series stands out for me. Wes is a big reason why.
He’s a human and there’s a burr under his saddle in the form of horse shifter, Tristan, who constantly flirts with him. One night, the two of them are together working a case of a missing shifter, when things take a turn that brings them into one another’s orbits at last. And from here, Wes becomes someone warm enough to melt my insides. My favorite story for him is during Christmas. Wes doesn’t go for the hoopla of decorating. Tristan likes to go all out. They find a very…interesting way to compromise.
Q: List five foods you can’t live without.
A: Mushrooms. Daiya cheese (vegan). Pretty much anything from Gardein (also vegan). Tartar sauce (vegan) to go on the fish filets (vegan) from Gardein (vegan). And did I mention mushrooms? Because, hello? MUSHROOMS! (Even two of my cats are addicted to them).
About the Book
Matt Bowers’s life ended at sixteen, when a vicious betrayal by someone who he should have been able to trust left him a shell of himself, fighting OCD and PTSD, living in constant fear and always running. When he buys a remote tract of land, he thinks he’s found the perfect place to hide from the world and attempt to establish some peace. For ten years he believes he’s found a measure of comfort, until the day a stranger begins to run on Matt’s road.
He returns every day, an unwelcome intrusion into Matt’s carefully structured life. Matt appeals to the local sheriff, who cannot help him since the jogger is doing nothing wrong. Gradually, after tentatively breaking the ice, Matt begins to accept the man’s presence—
But when the runner doesn’t show up one day, it throws Matt’s world into chaos and he must make the hardest decision of his life.
