Hoss McMasters has a working ranch, a bull riding career, a nosy momma, and a best friend he’s been in love with since he can remember. He’s a busy, happy cowboy, living the good life.
Then one morning he discovers a baby on his doorstep.
Well, Hoss does what any reasonable man would do—he calls his momma and his buddy, Sheriff Pooter, and they head to the clinic to see if Doc knows of any suddenly not-so-pregnant girls.
In the meantime, Hoss and his best friend, Bradley, have their hands full trying to care for an infant, run a ranch, and deal with the sudden confession that Bradley doesn’t hate Hoss for coming out to him in high school. In fact, Bradley’s been trying to catch Hoss’s attention for damn near a decade.
Review: Hoss McMasters is a rancher, a cowboy, a bull rider, a gay man, and, suddenly, a daddy to a little girl who was left on his doorstep with no explanation. Bradley is Hoss’s best friend, and his heart is stolen by the new little girl in his best friend’s life. She is taking up the space right next the one her daddy has unknowingly filled since Bradley and Hoss were boys.
Hoss’s life isn’t just his own, though. There’s a nosy momma, a good buddy sheriff, a weird explanation about why the baby shares a stranger daddy’s DNA, a mute dog, some heartache, and whole bunch of Tortuga’s usual western style fun. Since this is a romance, expect deep attractions, zany happenings, heartbreak and hurt—both emotional and physical—and love. Lots of love that makes a family a family, no matter who makes it up.
Dorian Bane gives life, light, and fun to this romp of a book. He takes a slightly choppy story and tries to make it complete with his voice talents. He succeeds quite well here. This is a romance novel. Not everyone who reads Tortuga or looks for Bane’s narrations will be expecting all the joy in the book. That’s OK, romance in the vein of this series of books is not for everyone, but if you’re in the mind to be entertained and expect the happy ending that each of these books shares, buy it. Enjoy it. Not everything needs to be heavy. The obstacle in this romance is real. The solution to it is also obvious, and Bane shows us at every turn how getting to the end will be fun and fulfilling. Toss in a nosy, strong-willed momma, and that smarter-than-she-should-be mute dog, and there’s a complete story.
These books are a nice change from some of the heavy, ‘everyone is broken’ books that populate the romance genre from time to time. Tortuga’s words and Bane’s narration pair well and are meant to be enjoyed. You should do that with this book. Romance that is sweet, real, and fun should not be dismissed. It should be as well-loved as the men in this book love each other. Even if they need to be spurred in the pants a few times to make it happen.
