Lisa: Weโre so pleased to have author Hailey Turner joining us today to celebrate the release of In the Shadows, book three in the Metahuman Files series. Hailey agreed to answer a few interview questions for me, and sheโs also offering a great giveaway opportunity, so be sure to check that out below.
Hi, Hailey, welcome! Letโs start out with an easy one: tell us something about yourself that most people donโt know.
Hailey: Iโm actually a diehard introvert and incredibly shy. I do social media because I know itโs important, but it still makes me anxious.
Lisa: Letโs take off your author cap and put on your reader cap for a moment: what do you look for in a book, what sort of protagonists do you love, do you have a favorite genre?
Hailey: My favorite genre is fantasy, with a subgenre of urban fantasy. I really love the idea of magic in the real world, and since I like my books to be somewhat grounded, I gravitate towards those stories more than the epic fantasy ones. Donโt get me wrong, I love fantasy and sci-fi in all its various subgenres, but urban fantasy is my absolute favorite and has been for many years now.
Lisa: What books and authors would you say influenced you to become a writer yourself?
Hailey: Tamora Pierce is definitely the catalyst for my writing. I read her Song of the Lionness quartet in middle school and it has stuck with me forever. Thatโs the first instance of picking up a book that made me seriously consider writing as something I could aspire to doing for the rest of my life. Melanie Rawn is another author who has stayed with me. The rich world-building she put into her Dragon Prince and Exiles trilogies have been an example I always look to when I struggle with details.
Lisa: What are your least and most favorite things about being an author?
Hailey: Time. There is never enough time to get everything done that I want to do in a day around my hectic job. On the flipside, when I can schedule myself days off to focus on writing, I have so much time that itโs hard for me to actually, you know, write.
Lisa: Would you say youโre superstitious? Do you have any weird habits or good luck rituals you adhere to when you sit down to start writing a new book? If so, care to share them?
Hailey: Iโm not superstitious, but I do have some ingrained writing habits that Iโll probably never break. I need a title in order to begin writing any story, and I need to write out a rough draft of the end scene first. I like to know what Iโm writing myself towards.
Lisa: Whatโs the one genre and/or trope you havenโt written yet, but would love to? Whatโs kept you from it so far?
Hailey: Friends to lovers. Mostly because I would want to write out their entire childhood shenanigans, and that really has no place in an adult novel. I love the idea of two characters being best friends for so long before they eventually fall in love, with a little miscommunication along the way! Someday Iโll find a story where I can write that.
Lisa: Okay, letโs shift from the craft and get into something completely different. If you were stranded on a desert island, what are three things youโd absolutely have to have?
Hailey: Coffee, kindle, and my laptop. My first choice should surprise no one. Coffee probably runs in my veins at this point.
Lisa: If you had to choose between becoming a superhero or supervillain, which would you choose and why? What would your superpower be?
Hailey: I would go with superhero, but probably a superhero who operates in the grey area of society. I have my own firm idea of what I believe to be right and wrong, and Iโd probably piss people off for behaving in a way that supports those beliefs, especially if it requires me to break some laws. But have no fear, I would totally rescue a kitten or cat stuck in a tree! My favorite power has always been telekinesis, so I would pick that. Itโs both an offensive and defensive power, which I think is great and could serve me well. I mean, just think about it, Iโd get no scratches pulling a kitten off the tree!
Lisa: If you could travel back in time, with all your years of experience and wisdom intact, what advice would you give to your teenage self?
Hailey: Iโd say, โTeenage Self, youโre going to make it to where you want to be. The road there sucks, but you got this.โ
Lisa: If you were to sit down and write your autobiography today, what would the title be?
Hailey: I Drink Coffee For Your Protection. (Despite my shyness with strangers, I am known as the mouthy one amongst my group of friends. They can tell when Iโve yet to have any coffee.)
Lisa: Star Trek, Star Wars, both or neither? Explain.
Hailey: Both! I love Star Trek and the progressive history behind its making, but also, the stories are just so fun and uplifting for the most part. I love Star Wars for the space opera feel of it. I really do love space opera and am a sucker for most shows in that genre.
Lisa: Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to be here with us, Hailey!

Blurb:ย Take a chance.
Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin doesnโt trust easily, and he most certainly doesnโt trust spies. Heโll work with them if ordered to, but that doesnโt mean he has to like it. Except Agent Sean Delaney is proving to be the exception to the rule. Thereโs something about Sean that gets under Alexeiโs skin and wonโt let go. Alexei would be lying if he said he wasnโt interested in what lay beneath the agentโs mask. When theyโre assigned together for a mission, Alexei vows to keep Sean safe all while trying to coax the hot agent into his bed.
Hold onto hope.
Agent Sean Delaney has spent his entire adult life living a lie for his country. When the MDF tasks him with finding evidence of criminal wrong-doing against the owner of a private military company, Sean knows exactly how to play the game to get what he wants. He just doesnโt know how to handle Alexeiโs advances, nor his own attraction to the younger soldier. Being a spy is lonely work, and Sean knows he should keep his distance, but saying no to Alexei is impossible from the moment they first kiss.
In a world of lies, the truth can be deadly.
When the mission takes a turn for the worse, the only thing left to do is run. In the wake of betrayal, and in the path of danger, can their fragile trust survive the battle?
