Xavier is a former FBI agent turned deputy sheriff who is hot on the trail of a South American child prostitution ring. Evan is fighting to put an end to rampant cocaine trafficking and chafing under the thumb of an election-hungry boss. When someone tries to kill the eleven-year-old witness who holds the key to both their investigations, they’re forced to work together as they put their lives on the line to protect him. As Chance and Xav collide in the heat of a sweltering North Carolina summer, dodging bullets and chasing bad guys isn’t the only action going on.

Review: Xavier Constantine leaves the FBI after one botched operation too many. He follows the only clue he has, to Wilmington South Carolina. Before his first day on his new job as a police detective, Xav has a one night hookup with C. Evan Fairchild, deputy district attorney to a power hungry DA.

Xav begins to look into the disappearance of a string of boys. He, along with his new partner, finds that someone has been thwarting the investigation into a possible child sex trafficking ring, drugs, and an internal failure that may all be connected. Chance Fairchild sees that possible connection between the sudden spike in crimes, especially the drugs. The DA goes so far as to reassign Chance to zero sum cases to keep him out of the way. However, Xav and Chance don’t stop at a one night stand. Their shared attraction will not stop, so they stop fighting it. But they are also drawn into a deepening web of crime and intrigue that puts them both in danger.

While some of the subject matter in A Solitary Man may be difficult at times, the child trafficking is handled as well as can be; only the details necessary for telling this story are told. Jim Pelletier’s narration is nice and flows easily. The accents of the locale are captured, as are the voices of children and a strong supporting female character. When Xav and Chance combine forces to finally put an end to the circle of crime surrounding their town, both men and their young witness are put into mortal danger. Pelletier does a fine job of conveying the tension, the passion, and the fast-paced action. We are left with a sense that each character and their distinct voices get full treatment here.

This is a fine book with a complete story and believable resolution and a very satisfying conclusion. Don’t pass on it because of some of the subject matter. If you like your romance with more story than just heavy petting and sex, this may be the book for you. The story is really good, the narration is well above average and adds new levels to the story. This book is a good buy at any price. You won’t be sorry.
