Blurb: Ever since he’d met Dominick Cortez unexpectedly on the subway, Rob had been gripped by powerful memories. The intense feelings of desire he felt as soon as Dominick spoke his name, had taken him completely by surprise. He was perplexed. After all, he’d moved on, hadn’t he?
A homicide detective, Dominick’s marriage to his job had saved him, helping him to leave his feelings for Rob in the past. Or so he’d thought. Then he ran into Rob on his way to work. But ever since their impromptu meeting, Dominick couldn’t stop thinking about the past. Then a suspect in a murder investigation leads Dominick to the Martindale Institute, the very place Rob Dewhurst works.
Review: Dominick Cortez has a lot to deal with. He’s a detective and the gay son of Frank Cortez, one of the most powerful men in the mafia family. Dominick is a disgrace to his father, but he doesn’t care. All he wants is for his mother and sister to be safe, and he’ll do what he can to make that happen.
Twelve years ago, Rob Dewhurst met Dominick at the Mirror Palace, and Dominick saved his life—in more ways than one. They had something special back then, but Rob made a big mistake. Now, Rob has run into Dominick on the subway and blurts out that he’s happy…but is he? He’s just gotten a promotion to Assistant Director of the Martindale Youth Detention Center, a job Dominick helped Rob get all those years ago. When Trent Sears, the son of a prominent politician and possible witness to a murder, is admitted to the facility, Rob once again comes face-to-face with Dominick. There are stumbling blocks for both Dominick and Rob, a murder case to be solved, and their past leads to danger for them now.
Patterns is a fast-paced thriller. The smattering of mystery and the mafia ties adds drama and suspense to the betrayal and danger. The plot and the layering of Rob’s and Dominick’s backstories are well executed, and I liked their reconnecting; it worked well and reflected the subject of second chances. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and I’m really interested to see what Suede Delray has planned for the sequel, More Patterns.
