What’s Next? A Long Hiatus
Writing and publishing Gay Romance has been very good to me. From the excellent fellow writers in the Writing MM Romance critique group (the talented Addison Albright is the admin there now) to editors Raven McKnight and Julie Bozza, and to fans and detractors alike, this has been the best learning experience as far as pushing my limits and gaining and honing the skills of the writing craft.
But… I’ve fallen out of love with Romance. It’s not you, it’s me. There have been other writing projects lying fallow until recently, historical mysteries whose voices I can no longer ignore, and a pervasive feeling of needing to move on.
I redeemed Nick Truman, corrupt FBI agent, my biggest and most challenging writing goal to date. Even negotiating Renaissance Florence was easier.
My new goals are varied, as ever. Let’s see…I’m fascinated by the women soldiers of the American Civil War, where at least a dozen women on both sides fought at every major battle. This gives my 1870s lady sleuth a strong background for detection. There are also a number of women who never gave up their male identities after the war, and I’d love to explore this more in another character. I believe the biggest lesson I’ve taken from this part of my journey is that diversity isn’t a modern invention. Post Revolutionary War is on my list. Inspired by the nonfiction history Hen Frigates by Joan Druett, there’s an older lady with a colorful history at sea with her husband solving mysteries now in her retirement.
There’s a big pile of history books to work through and getting back into the writing chair. I’m aiming for next year’s Pitchwars, but I’ll still be around. I’m stepping away for a time from writing Gay Romance, but not from reading it. :D

Blurb: Disgraced FBI agent Nick Truman has failed to save his sister, held hostage by a drug cartel until he could give them Alex Crow, who eluded him. His epic downfall lands him in Witness Protection, where he plays by the rules and keeps to himself. But the murder of his neighbor brings danger to his door. He unexpectedly finds himself the champion of innocents and helplessly attracted to the homicide detective in charge of the case.
This can’t end well.
Homicide Detective Hank Axelrod is good at digging out secrets, maybe because he hides a big one of his own. He also suspects his husband has one foot out of the door of their marriage and the specter of single life looms unpleasantly on the horizon.
A murder resembling another brings Nick into his world, a man who claims to be a mystery writer looking for a real life resource. Hank’s instincts say he’s more than that, and he’s rarely wrong.
Torn between the errant soon-to-be-ex husband and the distracting, sexy stranger, Hank needs to focus all his attention on his murder case before he becomes the next victim.
