Review: Paranormal stories can be either incredibly fun to read or so cookie cutter that it feels like torture just getting through to the end. Author M.A. Church gives her latest story, Dragon’s Hoard, a nice spin by mating a werewolf and a dragon, and gives both characters a little something special to make them even more interesting. Avery is an Omega, both highly prized and yet rather superfluous to any wolf pack. He has been sheltered most of his life, which he chafes at considering he is not the wilting flower many omegas are thought to be. Avery has a mind and will of his own, and is shocked when he discovers that he is to be the bargaining chip that will pay off a debt his father incurred by borrowing from the wealthy dragon, Warwick Ehecati.

Warwick is not only an ancient dragon who loves his money, he is also a shrewd businessman. When he senses that Avery is his mate, he allows Alpha Montgomery, Avery’s father, to repay the debt by giving his son to Warwick in return. But despite Avery’s wolf wanting Warwick the moment he sees him, the man is another animal altogether. Avery wants to be wooed, loved and not just a piece of chattel to be bargained off. Warwick has his work cut out for him, particularly since dragons are not known for falling in love or mating for life—something werewolves do with ease.

What worked so well in this novel was the dynamic between Warwick and Avery—both men were caught up in what their inner creature wanted and yet both were reluctant to give it full and unbridled rein. There was just enough hesitancy on both their parts to keep this from being a slam-dunk insta-love paranormal. While the angst level was minimal in this story, the apparent confusion on Warwick’s part when it came to courting Avery lent just enough tension to keep the story moving. I also thoroughly enjoyed the more descriptive passages of both men while in their animal forms—particularly the dragon who was impressive to say the least.

Yes, Dragon’s Hoard is a bit of paranormal fluff when it comes right down to it, which actually makes it a shoo-in for the Dreamspun Beyond house line and, all-in-all, a fairly entertaining love story to boot.
