Interview and Giveaway: Patrick’s Savior by Nic Starr

Lisa: We’re so pleased to have author Nic Starr joining us today on the tour for her newest release, Patrick’s Savior.

Welcome, Nic!

Nic: Thank you so much for having me to visit, Lisa. It’s great to stop by, answer some questions about my latest release, and let your readers know a little more about me.

Lisa: It’s my pleasure. So, let’s start with a book-related question: if you could spend some real-life time with one of the characters in this book, who would you choose and why?

Nic: I have a real soft spot for Patrick. He has a heart of gold and always sees the best in people. He’ll look past the exterior and doesn’t take actions at face-value, giving people the benefit of the doubt. However, this means sometimes he needs somebody to remind him to put himself first, to not always look out for others to his own detriment. So I’d do the ‘mum’ thing and take him under my wing. He also needs a cuddle every now and then when things go wrong for him. Although, I guess he has Simon to do that for him now. 😊

Lisa: Let’s answer the flipside, now: which character would you probably least get along with? Why?

Nic: There’s a guy called Ian in the book. Ian is the boyfriend of Patrick’s house mate. He’s the sort of guy who thinks only of himself. He doesn’t even consider how his words or actions could be interpreted by, or impact on others. Basically he’s the opposite of Patrick. I’m not a huge fan of people who can’t see past themselves.

Lisa: Now for an author-type question: what are your least and most favorite things about being an author?

Nic: I love being able to bring my stories to life, to take an idea and expand on it, to develop the characters, and give them a happy ending. I’ve found that writing is a wonderful outlet for me, and I love to other people enjoy my stories – it warms my heart to know I’m bringing readers joy. On the other side of the coin, I do find there’s some guilt involved in being an author. For as much pleasure as it brings me, when I’m not writing, or I don’t get my allocated word count for the day completed, it nags at me. But I guess on the plus side, this keeps me motivated to keep those words coming. 😊

Lisa: Would you say you’re superstitious? Do you have any weird habits or good luck rituals you adhere to when you sit down to start writing a new book? If so, care to share them?

Nic: I don’t think I’m superstitious, at least not when it comes to writing. Walking under ladders or breaking mirrors and it’s another story! I’m a planner so when I write, I follow pretty much the same process. I tidy my desk (not that it stays that way long) at the beginning of each story, and create new folders and documents for the book. Then I get brainstorming, outlining, collecting inspiration material, and building character profiles. Once I have a fair idea of my main characters, and a general outline, I start writing the first draft. My only ritual is ensuring I write something every day – if I stop, especially if it’s for more than a few days, it seems to really slow me down as it takes too long to get back into the story and I lose my flow.

Lisa: What’s the one genre and/or trope you haven’t written yet, but would love to? What’s kept you from it so far?

Nic: I’ve always wanted to try my hand at writing a paranormal story. I like the idea of being able to do something different and play with elements that don’t usually belong in a contemporary story. I haven’t fully tackled a paranormal story yet, most likely because I’ve thought that world-building would be a complicated process, plus I’ve had so many other stories to get out first. However, I have started work on a paranormal series featuring shifters. I have a high-level outline for the series, and I’ve done a detailed outline for book 1 and I’m 10k words in. So it’s definitely something that will be published in the (hopefully not too far) future.

Lisa: And now for something completely different: if James Corden invited you to Carpool Karaoke, what song(s) would you sing with him?

Nic: It would have to be Bohemian Rhapsody because I’m terrible at remembering lyrics and this is one of the few songs I remember. Plus it has some great sections where I can truly mangle it. Shh… don’t tell anyone but I can’t hold a tune to save my life!

Lisa: Haha! I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, either, as the saying goes. If you could be any animal in the world, what would you choose? Why?

Nic: I’d be my dog. She’s a Cairn terrier and she’s spoiled rotten. Scarlett spends her days following me from room to room, sleeping at my feet, or curled up on my bed. On weekends, we go to our house in the country where she chases – but thankfully doesn’t catch – anything that moves. It’s a good life.

Lisa: It’s a dog’s life, for sure! If you could travel back in time, with all your years of experience and wisdom intact, what advice would you give to your teenage self?

Nic: Life is what you make it so give it everything you’ve got. Enjoy don’t regret. Share the love.

About the Book

How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?

Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Unwanted attention from his housemate’s boyfriend is making him feel uncomfortable in his own home, and he’s facing uncertainty with his employment as an administrative assistant at the local elementary school. He finally breathes a sigh of relief when a friend puts him in contact with Simon, who has a vacant room.

Patrick’s Savior is a novel of approximately 69k words. It is part of a series but can be read stand-alone.
