Blurb: How can they get together with a monster in their way?
The warrior-priest. Gossamer wants true love. But his faery godmonster, a gigantic, winged, two-headed beast named Puff-puff, is determined to keep him “safe”–even from a broken heart.
The necromancer. Pox is a sexy fugitive. An exiled aristocrat, his ego is as big as a dragon’s maw. He has no time for love. Still, that brawny Gossamer might make a fine manservant.
**This gay romantic comedy contains four graphic, sexually explicit scenes and is intended for adults only.
(It also contains crude humor, a love story, and a big scary monster.)
This collector’s edition features a brand new cover, improved formatting, and the first chapter of the second book in the Chainmail and Velvet series!
Review: Gossamer Guffrey is a warrior priest. He also happens to be a hobgoblin. A sweet, faithful, gentle delight of a hobgoblin who, so far as I can tell, does not eat orphaned children, but he was cursed as a child and now bears the result of that spell in the form of Puff-puff, his faery godmonster, a two headed, winged lion beast.
And if that alone isn’t enough to make you even a little bit curious about this book, I’m not sure what the heckin’ else will.
Sionnach Wintergreen has penned a confection of a fairy tale in Because Faery Godmonster, a short novel with a little depth to it as well, and while I can’t help but feel it could have stood a bit more exposition in terms of the building relationship between Goss and a necromancer called Poxagliarri D’eimour (let’s just stick with Pox for short, hm?) who is hired to become part of a ragtag team of misfits which includes a human woman and a sassy dwarf bard, there is so much charm and humor and sheer joy amongst the conflicted feelings between Goss and Pox that it overrode any misgivings I might’ve had about how the whole of the story played out. It is a fairy tale, after all, and falling in love is a matter of course rather than an exception. “It’s not that Gossamer is fearless, I realize suddenly. It’s that he loves fearlessly.” Not gonna lie, that line right there made me “Aw!” right out loud.
Magic is all in a day’s work in the world Wintergreen has crafted. It’s not a rarity but rather a normal occurrence that goes a long way towards upping the odds of survival when one is accosted in the forest by such villainous villains, and in Henley the dwarven bard’s case, the magic provides for a few laughs too. He’s a little bit gross, to be honest. Funny in a gross ‘he’s never heard a bad fart joke’ sort of way.
The challenge of Kiona, Henley, Goss, and Pox’s survival is complicated by the fact that Pox is harboring a secret which has him on the run after a horrible betrayal leaves his spirit broken. Which Pox takes out on Goss with a consistency that makes him, Pox, come off as a poncy highborn twat. Probably because he is. But then…he begins to recognize what a treasure Gossamer truly is. That doesn’t mean the road to happily ever after doesn’t include a few potholes along the way, though. It takes some time for both Pox and Goss to cotton on to their mutual feelings.
This book is at once lighthearted but also touched by the somber notes of both Goss’s and Pox’s individual conflicts. It’s equal parts adorable and weighty, and I loved the building sexual tension between the hobgoblin and the nightsprite. Their quest is ambitious and the eventual consummation of their feelings for each other was unexpectedly erotic. I feel like I should throw in here, now, that there is a fisting scene, because Pox evidently doesn’t like his sex entirely vanilla, so do check your comfort level with that if you’re considering giving Because Faery Godmonster a try.
Sweet, a little angsty, comical and sexy all apply to this story. It’s such an easy, breezy read. All in a day’s fun, really. But, if Gossamer and Pox set out on the journey to right the horrible wrongs being perpetrated against an entire people by the High Wizards of the Golden Tower, there will be danger ahead for them, most likely of the chaotic magical sort, which should be both terrible and entertaining.
