Blurb: Chicago PD Detective Michael Branham reluctantly calls in the federal marshals when he gets wind of a dangerous fugitive. Ken “Sully” Sullivan flies in as the Agent-in-Charge. After a futile car chase during a blizzard and a resulting car accident, the two men take shelter in an unused stable.

Wounded and cold, Sully and Michael lower their defenses and admit their attraction to each other. Sully’s comfortable with his bisexuality, whereas Michael has some self-admitted attraction to men but has never done anything about it.

Months later, Michael has a family funeral in the DC area and arranges to meet Sully again. The heat still smolders between them. Then disaster hits Michael — the kind only another cop can understand.

Sully rearranges his life to support Michael, who is still uncertain about their new relationship. Can two men with high stress jobs from different cities find a way to meet each other in the middle?

Review: Michael Branham is a Chicago detective who meets Federal Marshal Ken “Sully” Sullivan in the course of a case. While the case is a bust, Michael and Sully have to survive a car crash in the snow while they both are suffering injuries. Despite that, they need to share body heat to survive the night, and, well, things might have gone beyond sharing just heat. 😉 Sully is bisexual, and Michael, while he admits previous attraction to men, has never actually acted on it. And while it could have gotten awkward and weird, Michael plays it low-key and Sully lets him.

When Michael has to go to DC for a family funeral, he contacts Sully to see if he’d like to grab dinner—and, of course, he does. But, there are a lot of other things that Sully wants as well, and Michael seems to be up for that program as well. They can’t really define what they are doing, but Sully really liked Michael, and he doesn’t want to scare him away.

When Michael is thrown into every cop’s worst nightmare, the first and only person he wants to call is Sully. Sully drops everything to come to Michael’s aid; he offers comfort and reassurance and a reality check that Michael desperate needs. Sully knows then what he wants, but it’s definitely not the time to push Michael. He takes his time and works to help take the pressure off of Michael, and help him see that there are more possibilities out there than he realizes.

I really enjoyed this story. Moler has a way of getting to the heart of a story without a lot of extraneous bits. Yes, they are LEOs, but this isn’t a procedural, and the details aren’t required to build this story. Many times I’ve been amazed at how she is able to tell a complete story, and show us the progression of her characters in so few pages. This is another good example of her aptitude for the novella. We get a clear picture of who these men are, how they are affected by their shared experiences, their history and past relationships, and how they each work their way through to seeing a future together. Recommended especially for fans of the shorter form that tells a compelling story.
