Blurb: Four years ago, Ryan and John decided they’d wait to get married until it came with full legal equality. Now, thanks to the Supreme Court, that historic moment has finally arrived. But two hundred miles separate Ryan’s hectic residency from John’s busy campus job. With a son in college, a daughter choosing her future, and a rambunctious Irish Setter needing attention, planning a wedding isn’t simple.
Of course, even the most perfect ceremony can’t solve all their problems. What does it take to build forever?
Review: This series. I love, love it. It’s great in print; it’s fabulous in audio. It’s a perfect contemporary romance with a truly wonderful cast of characters.
This delightful little short is basically the perfect extended epilogue to the whole thing. It’s set four years into the future from the end of book two, and it lands the reader smack into all the hard bits that book two foreshadowed. Ryan’s in his residency and living hours from home; John’s trying to cope with a semi-empty nest and a teenage daughter. Everyone’s missing everyone and desperately trying to make it all work.
I love that that the story puts the reader right in the characters’ headspace surrounding the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage. It’s thrilling to celebrate with these guys as they can finally start planning their own wedding. And the hilarious series of mishaps that follows is just like one of those stress dreams when you know you have to get to work, but you can’t find your shoes or your keys, the front door won’t open, and WHY ARE YOU NAKED?!
Kaje Harper does an excellent job of aligning the reader with the characters’ emotions, and it’s a fun (and bumpy) ride to the well-earned happy ending. This whole series is absolutely on my re-read list, and Building Forever is a sweet way to say goodbye.
