Blurb: Genius brain surgeon Patrick McCloud never thought he’d fall in love, let alone get married. He and Will Patterson are two years overdue for their honeymoon, and although romance doesn’t come naturally to Patrick, he’s determined to make it perfect.
Will works himself to the bone helping others and dealing with his family, who bring the drama nonstop. A tropical getaway without the usual shenanigans is just what the doctor ordered. But can Will’s family leave them in peace? Knowing the Patterson-Molinaro clan, it’s not likely…
Will and Patrick’s Endless Honeymoon by Leta Blake continues the soapy, sexy fun of the original six part Wake Up Married serial. In Healing, South Dakota, marriage is never boring!
Review: Mr. Saintly McGoodguy and his very own Dr. Brainy McSmartypants, aka Will and Patrick, husband and husband, are trying to have themselves a honeymoon here, people. Finally. It’s only taken them two years to find the time and inclination to make it happen, thanks to Patrick wanting to do something blatantly romantic for the love of his life, even if those kinds of overtures aren’t in Patrick’s wheelhouse of typical moods/behaviors. Goo-goo mushy stuff goes against the grain of his personality, but hey, he’s completely smitten with his boo, and just wants to do something good and kind for Will since he’s such a good and kind man…with parents whose raison d’etre can best be summarized as an ice pick to the temple in nature—unpleasant and should be avoided at all costs for the sake of one’s mental health.
Leta Blake has treated fans of this delightful soap opera of a serial to a special episode in Will and Patrick’s married life. I adore these men—flaws and foibles and family issues and all—and this novella is every bit as sweet and wonderful as I expected it would be. It’s also every bit as sexy as I’ve come to expect a Leta Blake book to be. This author’s erotica is composed of so much more than on page sex, though. The intimate scenes between Will and Patrick are firmly rooted in their emotional connection and the deep love they have for each other, and the respect they pay to each other and their desires. Blake has mastered the fine art of plotty eroticism, and it’s one of the many things I love about her work. These two men balance each other so well, Will softening some of Patrick’s rougher edges, and Patrick being such a solid source of support and encouragement for Will while they fulfill each other’s physical needs. It really is a lovely balance.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a Will & Patrick novella without a sip of side drama to wash it all down with, courtesy of the Patterson-Molinaro clan. Will’s mother is the Grand Poohbah of Guilt, and his dad is just so deliciously sleazy in a mobsterish bohunk kind of way. Their cray is both disturbing and mind boggling, but without them the scenery would be far less colorful, that’s for sure.
Many of the characters we’ve come to love either pop up in the story, or are mentioned by name, and they compose of and are enfolded in this wacky tapestry called Healing, South Dakota. I don’t know if Blake intends to do anything with the Uncle Kevin/Varun Choudry tease thrown in here, but I’d absolutely love to see what the potential is, if any, for a little sumthin’ sumthin’ there. There’s also a poignant moment of closure on Will’s past that was cathartic and touching and gave Patrick yet another chance to show how much he truly loves and cares for his husband.
Visiting this -verse always leaves me feeling a little voyeuristic, for lack of a better description. Written in the present tense, there’s something so intimate about being immersed in the story in ‘real time’, and it works so well here. The author’s stylistic choice was pretty inspired, in my opinion, especially during those sexy bits I mentioned earlier. As a reader, the present tense narrative can often prove difficult to lose oneself in because of that sense of always being present and right in the moment, but I honestly can’t imagine reading this serial any other way. It’s like being a part of the drama, comedy, romance and craziness of the world these characters populate.
For dedicated fans of this series, Endless Honeymoon is a must read treat. Things may be changing for Will and Patrick soon, something I fervently hope the author plans to explore further in future episodes, as I find myself continuing to cheer on and root for these guys and their shmoopily-ever-after.
