Best Books of 2017: Ky’s Picks and a Giveaway

My gosh, the end of 2017 draws near, and I’m so pleased to be bringing you the Best Books of the Year from one of our very newest members on Team TNA, Ky. Ky has some great titles, one that’s made it in just under the wire, so check it out and be sure to enter for the chance to win two eBooks from the list!

Wheels Up by Annabeth AlbertWheels Up deserves all the stars! It had me so immersed that I didn’t want it to end. This is another great installment in the Out of Uniform series, an emotional read with two kinky characters navigating a minefield of regulations and restrictions in an effort to find a way to be together, all while battling their feelings for each other. Wes and Dustin were amazing and earned a place right up there along with Apollo and Dylan as my favorite couple of the series. I can’t pick just one, sorry.

I won’t go into the plot at all. I’ll just recommend this to everyone because it’s so worth reading! There is enough angst throughout most of the book that will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. It’s over the relationship and the many obstacles they have to overcome in order to be together. Real obstacles. Their actions have serious consequences, and Annabeth Albert handled everything expertly, giving them a realistic solution.

We Met in Death by KA Merikan – The last few chapters of the book packed in so much action and suspense that I was on the edge of my seat while reading. That showed to me how well-written it was since it’s very rare that a book is able to get that reaction from me for an action scene. After all that nail chewing, the vibe of the story changed completely, and a sweet epilogue gave our characters their hard-won happily ever after.

I enjoyed reading We Met in Death very much, and I think it’s a must-read story for the lovers of dark romance. Finally, I want to mention that amazing cover from Natasha Snow. It’s so perfect and fitting for the story.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy by KA Merikan – I liked all the tropes the authors used, even the split near the end that is so common in romances. Here it wasn’t annoying; it was like something Dusk and Abe needed to go through in order to grow stronger and have a future. They got something out of their time as just friends. It wasn’t there just so there could be some drama in the story. It served a purpose.

I can’t wait to see what comes next for this band, and I’m very excited to see Dusk and Abe make appearances in the next books as an established couple.

5 shiny pink stars!

Uncomplicated Choices by Cara DeeUncomplicated Choices is light-hearted and funny at times, but also packs some emotional conversations. There is a lot of honesty and communication between the main couple, as well as between them and the ex-wife. The way these three handled the situation they found themselves in was very mature. I was happy to read about it and imagine what their future would look like. They found a way for their little family to work in the best possible way, and it was a way that made me excited to learn more about how their lives turned out in the years to come.

Get A Grip by LA Witt – A hook up that became the real deal. We’ve seen this trope many times, but when it’s done right it’s one of my favorite themes. In this book, it’s absolutely done right! There is no rush. Their deal is clear and at first it works just fine. When feelings come out to play, it happens in stages and not unexpectedly and out of the blue.

In the beginning, Shane was a bit all over the place, not knowing what he wanted and unable to decide how he felt about a casual arrangement. He changed his mind all the time, even in the course of a single dialogue, and I struggled to follow his thought process. I guess it was a understandable, as he found himself with a bit of freedom and the ability to be a little wild for the first time in his life.

PS I Spook You by SE Harmon – I can honestly say that I loved this book! The characters were great, the plot was great, the mystery kept you guessing “who did it”, and the writing was excellent. Plus, I didn’t find even one misspelled or missing word. No typos at all. Congratulations to the author and her editor for that! It’s always great to read a book in such a great form, even before official publication. It shows how much work and care was put into getting this book ready for the readers. I know how hard it is to catch every little mistake in such an extended work, so thank you for the amazing job you did in catching them all!

Rebel by Rhys Ford – Second chance romance and slow burn!

The title of the book reflects the reminders Gus has set for himself, and his take of the tattoo he has on his arm with the word Rebel. Gus was broken from some of the people closest to him, but he managed to reach adulthood and navigate it as well as he could. He had self-esteem problems and trust issues, but all of those things were completely and totally understandable, given the rough start his life had.

There was a lot of pain in all of the characters’ pasts, but they were all able to pick themselves up and make something of their lives. The five brothers formed a “stitched-together family”, as they called it, and Gus saw Luke as his “adopted twin”. All those characterizations show the love that existed between them, but also their desperate need to not be alone in the world. It shows Gus’s need to see his own face on someone else again, even though he knows that’s never going to happen. They didn’t care if there were blood ties between them; they had been burned by way too many people who had them. Now, they chose their family and stuck together, no matter what.

  3. Oh, I also saw the video (good one) with the question of what I think of when I think of equality. I have a very broad view on that, I’m fairly egalitarian, so any form of lessening for whatever reason is a reason to fight for equality. And I think of all the sacrifices made by others so that I might enjoy equality..

When the third book in the Beautiful Monsters series by Jex Lane was published this year, I finally decided to start the series and I am so glad I did. I also liked Rule Breaker by Lily Morton and Tender With A Twist by Annabeth Albert.

  8. I’ve been reading the Porthkennack series from Riptide, with the British authors. I’ve never been to the U.K., but those authors describe Cornwall very vividly. I also enjoyed “Glitterland,” set in the U.K. as well, but with a very different tone to it. The author said he drew on his “inner pretentious git” for Ash’s POV. I really liked Darian, the love interest.
