There are as few things as controversial in an urban fantasy setting than a werewolf.

Other supernatural creatures have rules that are pretty much engraved in stone or have no rules at all, making it easier to create your own, but werewolves have a special oddness to them. Actually, most shifters do. They require a suspension of not only disbelief but physics. After all, you are asking the reader to not only believe a full-grown man can turn into a wolf but also retain a sense of humanity in that form.

Or, at least that’s the basics.

We can examine the physics and the energy required for such transformation as well as the debris of the discarded form, but that’s a lot of science go into just to talk about a single book. I actually have talked about it and have driven most of my friends insane with the bits and bobs of what to do with fur, bones and fang.

Every author does play around with their shifters. Within the confines of the werewolf rules — established tenets from folklore and horror films viewed by generations of Winchesters and geeks — is usually enough room for a writer to make the shifter their own. Some people default to magic, which theoretically is a thing, but since I tend to view magic as a science construct, writing a werewolf that way wasn’t for me.

Actually, writing the werewolf hadn’t been on my to-do list until the day Elizabeth North from Dreamspinner Press asked me about writing something that I’ve never written before.

I immediately thought of the werewolf.

I’d had a glimmer of an idea floating around in the back of my head — which actually is the storage for a lot of places both dark and dreary — and I hadn’t imagined it being a thing to write about because there was so much on my plate.

Until that moment when I suddenly had space for a novella.

More specifically, a werewolf novella.

So, Once Upon A Wolf was born.

The physics were problematic but not insurmountable and, more importantly, the romance turned out to be sweet. I know, some of you are saying; Maybe sweet for you, Rhys. The tale (no pun intended) I had in my head was a bit grisly and slightly dark, but as I began to write the story, it sweetened. A loving relationship bloomed between Gibson and Zach, and when it was all said and done, I was really happy with the romantic tone of the story.

So, I would like to introduce you to the first in a series of books about werewolves, the men they fall in love with, and the heartbreaks and joys they experience along the way… Once Upon A Wolf

About the Author

Rhys Ford is an award-winning author with several long-running LGBT+ mystery, thriller, paranormal, and urban fantasy series and was a 2016 LAMBDA finalist with her novel, Murder and Mayhem and a 2017 Gold and Silver Medal winner in the Florida Authors and Publishers President’s Book Awards for her novels Ink and Shadows and Hanging the Stars. She is published by Dreamspinner Press and DSP Publications.

She’s also quite skeptical about bios without a dash of something personal. Rhys shares the house with two cats, Yoshi, a grumpy tuxedo and Tam, a diabetic black shorthair, as well as a ginger cairn terrorist named Gus.
