Blurb: Carter Embree has always hoped to be rescued from his productive, tragically boring, and (slightly) ethically compromised life. But when an urchin at a grocery store shoves a bundle of fluff into his hands, Carter goes from rescuee to rescuer – and he needs a little help.
Sandy Corrigan, the vet tech who helps ease Carter into the world of dog ownership, first assumes that Carter is a crazy-pants client who just needs to relax. But as Sandy gets a glimpse into the funny, kind, sexy man under Carter’s mild-mannered exterior, he sees that with a little care and feeding, Carter might be “Super-Pet Owner” – and decent boyfriend material to boot.
But Carter needs to see himself as a hero first. As he says good-bye to his pristine house and hello to carpet treatments and dog walkers, he finds that there really is more to himself than a researching drudge without a backbone. A Carter Embree can rate a Sandy Corrigan. He can be supportive, he can be a hero, he can be a man who stands up for his principles!
He can be the owner of a small dog.
Review: I read and reviewed the e-book for Amy Lane’s Freckles when it was released, and felt compelled to also jump on the audio when it came out last month. I’m so glad I did! I was reminded of this adorable book that I loved, and was treated, once again, to the delightful story of Carter, the lost lawyer, Sandy, the sexy vet tech, and Freckles, the puppy who stole the show. Combining this already wonderful story with another brilliant narration from Nick. J Russo made it even more of a treat!
Everything changed for Carter the day a tiny bundle of fur was thrust into his arms, and he unwittingly became the owner of a small dog. He was instantly compelled to make some long overdue changes in his life after realizing how unhappy he had become working under his asshole of a boss at the law firm, and how lonely he must have been that he allowed himself to believe that what basically amounted to a 3-month one-night stand was the only ‘relationship’ he was worthy of. Carter’s metamorphosis over the course of the story was fantastic, as was Sandy helping him finally realize what a catch he really was. I loved this, from a late-night, post-coital conversation with Sandy…
“I guess I just haven’t been able to think, outside of the law office. Until now—until I got Freckles—and I realized I could change my life around a dog— “ he turned his gaze to Sandy “—or around a nice man who likes dogs. I didn’t believe I had alternatives.”
I absolutely adored Sandy, maybe even more so this second time around. He’s so kindhearted and thoughtful, and I loved how he really saw Carter—after he decided that Carter wasn’t the complete lunatic he presented as when he first brought Freckles in to the vet’s office, of course. Sandy’s patience with Carter, and willingness to go slow with things in order to ensure them both that things were real between them, was super endearing. And, if I hadn’t been in love with Sandy already, Nick J. Russo’s Sandy voice was sooo sexy, it would have definitely sealed the deal!
Freckles is a heart-warming tale of redemption and forever love of all kinds that is cleverly centered around a dog. Lane did a fantastic job of telling Carter and Sandy’s story, and somehow always bringing everything back to Freckles. And, Nick J. Russo brought the story and the characters to life in an awesomely entertaining way. I found myself smiling until my cheeks hurt, and laughing out loud in my car on quite a few occasions.
