Quinn is chatting with us about bringing minor characters into the spotlight, and there’s also a giveaway, so be sure to check out those details below.

Minor Characters as Protagonists

If you’ve been following the Murmur Inc. series, then you’ll recognize the main character of Cam Boy instantly: he was a minor character in Book Two, Action. It’s not unusual for a series to turn side characters into main characters, but in my case, I did it almost accidentally.

When I’d finished writing the first book, Hotline, it was meant to be a one-off. The Murmur Inc. series wasn’t even a thought in my head. But there was a plot idea that I never got to write, because Hotline went in a different direction. So, I decided to write another book, and it occurred to me that instead of coming up with a brand-new character, I could recycle a minor character from Hotline. Enter Pete. Most people don’t realize Pete made a cameo before his big closeup in Action, but he’s in the very first chapter of Hotline.

As I was writing Action—with no intention of writing a third book—it happened again. I couldn’t get to the plot point I’d come up with because I ran out of space. It seemed another book was in order, only this time, I knew exactly who I wanted to write about. Josh, or Joshua, as he’s called in Action, was begging for his own story, especially since he’s a bit of a brat in Action. Loveable, but a brat. I was so excited to write about him, and this time, the plot point finally got tackled.

There is actually a minor character in Cam Boy that I would choose to star in Book Four, but right now, the plan is for this book to be the last one. Perhaps I’ll pick it up again in the future, but I feel good about where it’s leaving off.

Quinn Anderson is an alumna of the University of Dublin in Ireland and has a master’s degree in psychology. She wrote her dissertation on sexuality in popular literature and continues to explore evolving themes in erotica in her professional life.

A nerd extraordinaire, she was raised on an unhealthy diet of video games, anime, pop culture, and comics from infancy. Her girlfriend swears her sense of humor is just one big Joss Whedon reference.
