Blurb: Domingo is a notorious pirate wanted for a list of crimes longer than he is tall. He still has not solved how he managed to secure Lieutenant James Richardson Flint of His Majesty’s Royal Navy as his beau, given they tried to kill one another at first sight years ago. A chance rendezvous in Nassau prompts Domingo and James to embrace the summer heat with nothing but two stolen candles and Domingo’s authoritative instincts to create a toe-curling encounter centered on dominance and submission.
Though he wields considerable power in his day-to-day life, James is happy to forfeit control and make the most of his shore leave with the only man to ever bring him to his knees.
Review: This story is a historical, erotic BDSM short. Qeturah Edeli is a new author for me; I love historicals, especially when they are a bit kinky, and the set up for this book was hard to resist. All in all, I enjoyed this story. Writing a novella is hard, but when they are even shorter than that, the need to be concise is paramount. The Pirate’s Spoils gives a us a peek into the world of a certain pirate, or privateer, who quartered in Nassau, Bahamas, in the 1730s.
Domingo is of questionable heritage. He makes no excuses for how he has lived and doesn’t intend to make excuses for how he plans to keep living, either. As a seaman, the world is his oyster and work is easy to come by when his funds are low. So what if he only takes sailing trips which leave him in the vicinity of Nassau. That doesn’t indicate that he wants to be in port when a certain English Naval officer makes landfall—of course it doesn’t.
James Flint has been in His Majesty’s Royal Navy since he was a lad. Running across the likes of Domingo is nothing new for him. Having a relationship with someone like him is. But James cannot help himself. Domingo has something that James has always craved—the kind of domination that takes James to his knees.
Even though this is such a short story, we get a sense of our MCs’ colorful history together. We get a real-time glimpse into their present day, and there are solid, intuitive leanings into their future and continuing relationship. They have an affection for each other, an affinity, and it goes deeper than mere friendship or sexual release. But let’s be real. The Bahamas in 1730 is not the place for a realistic long term HEA for two men who live the lives these two men live.
There is definitely enough intrigue in the storyline that I wish the author would make it into a full-length novel—I think the content is there—but on second thought, I appreciate that the author gave us just enough of these two to leave us with a good feeling and sense of satisfaction with the story. The writing can be choppy, and there are things which could have been expounded on and others edited, but writing a short is hard and I applaud the effort.
Take this tale for what it is—a short BDSM, very erotic story—and enjoy.
