We’re so pleased to have author Grace Kilian Delaney joining us today on the Waking Oisin blog tour. Grace is here today to talk about character development, and there’s also a giveaway for you, so be sure to check out those details at the end.
Welcome, Grace!
Hi Everyone! Grace Kilian Delaney here! A big thank you to The Novel Approach for inviting me to promote my latest release, Waking Oisin, and to talk a bit about how his character developed.
Every character I’ve written so far has a part of me channeled into him or her. Oisin Harrison underwent several developments over the course of a year. I’m not a fast writer and for all my plotting and pantsing sometimes the characters have to brew like tea before they start to communicate clearly.
Oisin’s name is taken from an Irish Myth where the hero, Oisin (sounds like oh-sheen or ocean) marries Niam, the daughter of the King of the Land of Eternal Youth. Together they go to her father’s kingdom and Oisin is given everything he wants. Eventually, he misses his homeland so he returns only to find three hundred years have passed and as soon as his feet touch the earth, he ages quickly. There’s no HEA for Oisin or his wife Niam! Here’s a link to hear the story.
I originally wrote Waking Oisin around BDSM and Trent being reluctantly drawn back into being a Dom. He had more of a savior complex and thought he could protect Oisin if he took him on as his sub. The original novel was far darker and felt wrong for Oisin, and I decided to rewrite the entire book. Most the characters from the original made it into the rewrite and by that time they were all talking to me.
Oisin is in that weird space in life where he’s technically an adult, but because he had been sheltered and always done what’s expected of him versus following his passion, he acts immature. That frustration has to go somewhere! He loves animals and wants to work with them, but his father and his fiancée pressured him into going to law school and he’s slowly dying inside. Or as he puts it he’s a zombie masquerading as the living. His counterpoint is his gender-fluid cross-dressing friend Devon, who has never compromised who he is. Oisin admires and envies him. He even emulates him, but that becomes a lesson as he discovers who really is and what he wants. Life pushes him out of his comfort zone and Trent is a catalyst, giving him the encouragement he needs to make that transition.
Oisin’s character portrays a struggle I’ve battled. Being a writer and composer are wonderful gifts, but there is always doubt, especially when the financial returns are inconsistent. Our society equates money with self-worth, and it’s been difficult for me to separate the two. With age comes wisdom, and I remind myself that no amount of money can buy the feeling of happiness when something I’ve created, music or books, is released into the world. And most authors will agree that hearing from those who have read our stories and enjoyed them is the reason why we keep going in this difficult industry.
About the Book
Oisin Harrison blames his fiancée’s distrust for ruining their relationship. He blames his father for pushing him into law school. But more than all that, he blames himself for letting other people’s expectations stop him from going after his dream. But dressing in drag with his best friend is the one thing Oisin refuses to compromise.
As Sin, he meets handsome Trenton Fisher, a man who appreciates Oisin’s cross-dressing. Trent upends his world by doing things to his body no one ever has, making him want more than just one night together. That is, until Oisin discovers his hot hookup works at his father’s law firm and is angling for a promotion.
To complicate things, Trent doesn’t seem to recognize Oisin out of drag. Or does he?
Will Oisin and Trent’s magnetic attraction grow to something deeper, or will it threaten to jeopardize their careers and futures?
Waking Oisin contains characters from Seven Minutes but can be read as a standalone.
Categories: Contemporary, LGBT, contemporary, bisexual, gay, genderqueer, new adult, cross-dresser, college student, lawyer, age-gap, piercings & tattoos, dirty talk, toys, spanking, D/s dynamics, light kink, family drama, pets

About the Author
Grace Kilian Delaney resides in flammable Southern California where she spends the wee hours of the morning drinking coffee and writing. She identifies as genderfluid and pansexual, though both are recent labels, and a goal of hers is to create stories that include gay, bisexual, and genderfluid characters.
