Welcome, Lynn!
Out of the Ocean was one of the most challenging stories for me to write.
It’s based on that what if question. What if two guys were stuck on a raft out in the middle of the ocean… It has several themes going on. Survival, falling for the guy you’re stuck with, and its also kind of a May-December romance. Or maybe that’s June-September. Cal has just turned fifty and Scott is in his early thirties. It all came together in strange ways.
Cal has some characteristics based on my husband who actually turned 50 this year, but some of his traits are all Cal. He’s quiet and rough around the edges, but has a big, sensitive heart.
Scott was an interesting development. He started out in my head as more of a playboy, but that fell off when I saw he was simply misunderstood—aren’t they all? He was trying to make his way in the world his own way, which meant butting up against his hard-headed father.
The research was very in depth. I found out a lot of things that I never even used in the book, but it was fascinating. A lot of it was just scattered lightly throughout. I wanted to talk more about bottom trawling, which destroys the sea floor. It’s a terrible practice, so I slid that in there. I learned about many types of sea life and nautical terms. It was crazy.
I also researched ship wreck survivors, and one person’s story in particular was very influential to what happened with the guys out in the ocean. Steve Callahan’s story was more dire by far than my fictional guy’s situation, but his struggle—I hope—added some depth to my shipwreck.
