Blurb: Life for Lou Travis changed drastically when, as Carlo Farro, he turned state’s evidence on the two mobsters he worked for. He didn’t know, when he was put into the WITSEC program, that he would end up falling in love with the marshal tasked with protecting him.
Walter Brooks certainly didn’t expect love to come into his life in the form of a small-time drug trafficker. But it did. Now, under the name Wayne Bourke, he, his adopted daughter Rae, and Lou own a protection business — and have for the last seventeen years.
Suddenly their lives change when Regotti, one of the mobsters Lou testified against, is released from prison. The man wants Lou dead. Can Lou, Wayne, and Rae stop him from finding them and putting his deadly plan into motion?
Review: When you fall in love with someone in the witness security program, what can you do? If you’re Walter Brooks and Carlo Farro, you change your names and professions, and the name of your nine-year-old adopted daughter, Robin. Now, seventeen years later, Wayne (Walter), Lou (Carlo), and daughter Rae (Robin) have their own security business. But the past comes back to disrupt their settled lives.
Lou was a drug trafficker who’d made a deal with the District Attorney to testify against two of his bosses, Tony Regotti and James DeMarco, with the hope to take down mob boss Piero Grimaldi. Now the mob has come back to seek revenge against Lou and Wayne, and they all go into hiding once again. Rae’s a whiz with computers and along with her fathers and a former acquaintance of Lou’s, Matteo Nardi, they come up with an intriguing plan to take down their pursuers.
This was a fast paced, suspenseful and intriguing short novella from Edward Kendrick, who never fails to hook me into his stories. It’s got a bit of a heartwarming touch too, in how Wayne found his adopted daughter. The connection between Lou, Wayne and Rae is warm and caring with special humorous moments as well. All in all, this was another good story from Edward Kendrick.
