Blurb: Nobody says no to a Prescott.
Not even one of their own.
Holden:
Living up to expectations had never been easy, but when I went after something, I got it. Success. Money. Victory. I was standing on the doorstep to having it all. There was only one thing standing in my way.
Gage:
Power and prosperity are overrated. Especially when they come at a price. When enough became enough, I walked away. Nothing had ever tempted me to look back, until one day the past showed up in my backyard.
I’m not so sure I can walk away a second time.
Review: Lisa: Hey, Jules…do you have your review ready for Alaska?
Jules: Oh…Damn…Were there words in that book?!? *goes back to staring at cover*
Ha! Oh, man…I crack myself up. *snort* Alaska is way more than a pretty cover, though. There actually are words in this book, and they are FANTASTIC. I absolutely loved it. Cate Ashwood has such a laid back, readable style, and she is continually upping her game and improving her craft. I was so impressed with and, frankly, utterly charmed by this novel. I loved the setting, I adored the characters, and I was completely enthralled with the story.
Holden Prescott is more or less forced by his father, Philip Prescott, to travel to Sawyer’s Ferry, Alaska, with the seemingly impossible task of convincing Dr. Gage Emerson to return to NYC, to the company he left behind three years ago. Gage did not leave on good terms, entirely disgusted with the person his partner and former mentor had become, and is still furious now. He vehemently refuses to even begin to hear Holden out, and tells him he’s wasting his time by being there. What Gage doesn’t initially understand is why Holden can’t just give up that easily. Holden has been living in his father’s shadow, or, more accurately, under his thumb, for his entire professional career. Really, for his entire life. His dad, aka, Douchebag, has been holding Holden’s job, his apartment, and his living allowance over his head until Holden pays him back the last of the money he loaned him for med school. Before the trip, Douchebag threatened to take everything from Holden if he fails at his task, and Holden has no doubt he’ll follow through.
I cracked up at some of the initial meetings between Holden and Gage. There were quite a few hilarious moments, like this one, when Holden is stuck outside Gage’s house during a blizzard…
When I couldn’t take it anymore, I stomped my way to the mudroom and pulled my coat and boots on like they’d personally pissed me off. I’d had a perfectly relaxing evening planned, and now I was gearing up to trek through knee-deep snow. Fucking Prescott. Why the hell hadn’t his parents used a condom?
These guys have such fabulous chemistry—both when they’re beyond annoyed with each other in the beginning, and when they can no longer deny the attraction between them and things get physical. They were sexy as hell together.
The writing overall is so, so good. I’ve always enjoyed Ashwood’s books, but Alaska felt like it was a notch above. There were some high-intensity scenes at the hospital that were done incredibly well, and I loved how the whole story flowed. The characters were well-developed, and I loved all the interactions. Gage’s best friend and colleague, Logan, was so great, and Holden’s friend Frankie stole several scenes. And, as I said, the sex scenes were steamy and well-written. I wasn’t even close to being tempted to skim! 😉
I will for sure be reading this one again at some point. And, I can’t wait for whatever is coming next in the series. I have some theories as to who the next book might focus on, so I can’t wait to see what Ashwood has in store for us! Definitely pick this one up, guys!
