Blurb: Charles Hunter’s team is on a mission to extract an unidentified ATF agent from an undercover job gone wrong. All they’ve got to go on is the rendezvous location—until Charles recognizes the ex he hasn’t seen in years. Their “simple rescue mission” is about to get a lot more complicated.
For Ángel Medina, adjusting to life after his cartel nightmare is hard enough without confronting memories of a failed relationship. All he wants is a fresh start. But when a violent stalker lashes out from the shadows, Ángel realizes his nightmare is far from over.
As the stalker’s obsession escalates and bodies start dropping, Charles and Ángel are thrown together in a desperate search for the culprit. Tempers flare and old passions reignite, drawing them back into the same turbulent relationship that once ended in disaster.
But the stalker isn’t letting go—and the next strike might hit straight through the heart.
The Story: After the drug kingpin who Angel has been undercover with is murdered, he needs immediate assistance pulling out of his assignment. When Charles Hunter and his team go in for the extraction, it’s a real shock for him to see the man he was once in love with sitting amidst some of the most dangerous cartel hitmen. Now stateside and protected, Angel begins to receive threats from beyond the grave. Could the man who had used him so unmercifully still be alive? Who is stalking Angel and why? Charles is determined to find out and keep the man safe at all costs. Unfortunately, Angel and Charles have some unfinished business that has left them both wary of falling in love with each other ever again. Still, the heart wants what it wants, and both men will have to find and take out Angel’s stalker before it is too late to even consider being more than friends with benefits.
Audio Review: I love this narrator. Using accents easily, or deep gravelly voices to differentiate characters, plus higher, breathier intonations for a female persona, Nick J. Russo masterfully waded through a reading with multiple characters like it was a jaunt in the park. Through it all, his narrator’s voice stood out each time. It amazes me how easily this voice artist moves from one voicing to another, never allowing one to bleed into another.
His pacing during the prose passages was a perfect rate—just slow enough to allow the listener to get every word, and yet continually moving at a tense rate that accentuated and maintained the air of tension the author’s words implied. It takes a consummate professional to take on such a story with so many different characters and give each one their own unique voice. I was absolutely glued to this audio recording—that speaks to the level of expertise that Mr. Russo brings to his work. Only a gifted voice actor is able to proficiently cover a multitude of voicings without ever confusing them or allowing them to slide into his narration passages. The more I hear of Mr. Russo, the more certain I am that he is one of the hottest audio actors on the scene today.
