Blurb: Homicide detective Levi Abrams is barely holding his life together. He’s reeling from the fallout of a fatal shooting, and his relationship with his boyfriend is crumbling. The last thing he’s prepared for is a serial killer stalking the streets of Las Vegas. Or how he keeps getting thrown into the path of annoyingly charming bounty hunter Dominic Russo.
Dominic likes his life free of complications. That means no tangling with cops—especially prickly, uptight detectives. But when he stumbles across one of the Seven of Spades’s horrifying crime scenes, he can’t let go, despite Levi’s warnings to stay away.
The Seven of Spades is ruthless and always two moves ahead. Worst of all, they’ve taken a dangerously personal interest in Levi and Dominic. Forced to trust each other, the two men race to discover the killer’s identity, revealing hidden truths along the way and sparking a bond neither man expected. But that may not be enough to protect them.
This killer likes to play games, and the deck is not stacked in Levi and Dominic’s favor.
Review: Levi Abrams is a detective on the edge. His life seems to be spinning out of control. After being the officer who fatally shot a suspect, he is once again under scrutiny by one and all. He’s also reeling from a bad breakup, and he’s just fallen into a serial killer case.
Dominic Russo is a bounty hunter with a past. Since leaving the military, he’s become the one thing police tolerate but love to hate. He also stumbles onto some of the Seven of Spades victims, and it draws he and Levi together. They compare notes, they find common ground, and each is becoming the object of the serial killer’s interest—because together they seem to be solving the puzzle of who he is. When the hunt for the killer begins revealing other deeper secrets, Levi and Dominic both risk their careers and their lives while trying to fight their obvious attraction.
Wyatt Baker is the perfect narrator for this book. He is adept at action scenes as well as the growing attraction between the two men, and he portrays the characters with secrets to hide with the proper disdain they deserve. Because this is book one of the series, a lot of groundwork is laid by the author, and Baker’s talents make it seem interesting and adds to the layers of plot and a barely-contained love affair that can become so much more. As bodies pile up, secrets and grudges are revealed, attraction turns to tentative love, and the killer gets more and more interested in Levi and Dominic, Baker takes the lovely words Kingsbridge wrote and makes them come alive for the listener. The pace is so tight and quick that it hardly seems like eight hours of narration. But every bit of information is important in this first book, and all of it gets Baker’s attention to detail.
Buy this book. The print series has become some of the most anticipated books in the genre. This narration is the perfect companion to the book. You will be disappointed when the book ends as you wonder how soon the next narration is coming. Let’s hope Wyatt Baker continues as the narrator. This collaboration should continue to the series’ end, if possible.
