Blurb: Punk’s not dead, but it’s time to redefine life.
Devlin Waters thought he’d have music forever. But the tragic death of his best friend ended the 20-year run of his punk band, Negative Impression. Unable to process the loss, Devlin distances himself from everyone and everything that reminds him of the band. But 41 is too young to curl up and wait for the end. In a search for a second career, he finds himself at university with a bunch of kids young enough to be…his kids. His sexy archeology professor, however, makes Devlin think about life beyond his grief….
Dr. Jack Johnson does not appreciate Devlin’s lack of respect, his inability to be serious, or his chronic lateness. Worse, he hates that he’s attracted to a student. When he realizes Devlin is the rock star he crushed on in his youth, he drops his guard – against his better judgment.
Before they can move forward together, Jack must admit to Devlin that he’s not only an admirer, but he also sings in a cover band. How will Devlin react to his ultimate fanboy when his own music has died?
Review: Devlin Waters was a rock star. Was. When his best friend and bandmate died tragically, Devlin went into hiding. He stopped the music that had meant so much to him. He cut off his remaining bandmates and changed his life by going back to college and finding a new career.
Dr. Jack Johnson teaches archeology. He’s the first professor that Devlin meets as an adult student. Devlin seems to have a bad attitude: he arrives late, he draws attention to himself, and Jack finds him, attractive and infuriating. But, Jack has a secret. He’s the lead singer in a tribute band that does all of Devlin’s music.
Darcy Stark does a very fine job with a book that has a thin plot at times, but his work elevates the words to something nice. This book is a romance and the plot is predictable in places, but Stark makes it work well. Devlin’s mom is treated really well. She helps drive the plot, and Stark gives her all the attention she deserves. When the fight between the two main characters comes, Stark gives a brilliant reading of a situation that could have been cliché. When Devlin’s mom and Jack’s friend step in to push them back in the direction they need to go, Stark gives them equal weight and makes them fully a part of the book.
Banded Together is a good book with really good narration. Buy the book if you are a KC Burn fan. Buy it if you enjoy romance. Buy it for the work Darcy Stark puts into making this an enjoyable listen for lovers of romance.
