Blurb: The time of Anubis is at hand. Working together against him, the goddess Sirius and the god Orion have helped mankind prepare by uniting Blaze, Conner, Darric, and Aden to fight the evil in the world. But in the war to come, the werewolves will need more allies, and this will extend beyond werewolf kind.
Marcus, an ex-Marine who’d lost both his legs in a landmine accident, is now Human Liaison Officer for Blaze’s pack. Having lost his lover too when the man couldn’t bear to live with “a cripple”, Marcus never expected that he’d fall in love again, let alone with the werewolf Kellan who seemed to be universally hated by the pack.
The Winter Circle is moving, and a psychopathic pastor has abducted Nate, one of the wolves from Hunter’s pack. For once the wolves cannot rescue him — it has to be a human — and now Marcus must save the wolves from their biggest threat: one of their own.
If Marcus succeeds, he will bring in a new era in mankind’s battle against the power of evil, starting with a simple promise and ultimately mending four broken hearts.
Review: Following the events of the third book, The Promise shifts attention from Aden, Blaze, Connor, and Derric to follow the human Marcus, the distrusted wolf, Kellan, and Ricoh and Ricoh’s abducted mate, Nate. Right from the start I was drawn into the story. Although I was worried I would miss the Supreme Alphas, I found the shift in focus was actually welcome, and I enjoyed learning about the new group of protagonists. Marcus is a strong man, but he questions his feelings for the wolves around him. He also feels less-than due to having lost both legs. When he and Kellan bond instantly, Marcus feels it can’t be possible. Not only is Marcus not a wolf, he feels he’s only half a man.
Ricoh, on the other hand, is torn. He knows Nate is his mate, and he betrayed him after the events from the previous book. He also wants his Alpha, Hunter, who has been leading him on for years. And then there are the feelings he’s developed for Marcus, who knows just what to say or do when Ricoh needs it most. But how can he love anyway when he let Nate down?
I loved this book. Just as before, Victoria Sue knows how to keep readers on edge and leave them guessing until the end. I was completely blindsided by the reveal at the end, and yet it made sense. I just wasn’t expecting it. I didn’t really have it figured out, but I wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did!
Each of the characters is well-developed and distinct from the others. Not only that, but they are different from the previous grouping as well, which brings this world to life that much more. I felt for Marcus and his pain, Ricoh and his feeling of betrayal, Kellan’s loneliness, and Nate’s self-hatred. I wanted them to overcome their struggles and find happiness. Of course, there are bigger things at play that weave all the books together, and The Winter Circle is going to be the least of their worries soon.
Fans of shifter stories, mpreg (none in this book, but it was present in previous books), and this series will enjoy book four. Even though this book does focus on a new group of characters, the events are directly related to the first three books, and they must be read in order to get the full story. I highly recommend it!
