Review: Carlisle Deputy Clay Brown finds himself with an unusual assignment. He’s been assigned as part of the detail that’s transporting his estranged cousin Harper Grange from prison to court. Knowing how dangerous Grange is, Clay is on his guard, but something goes very wrong and Grange escapes.
Judge Andrew Phillips presided over Grange’s case, and now Grange is gunning for the judge and because of his familiarity with both Judge Phillips and Grange, Clay is assigned security duty for the judge. Andrew is a man who is always in control, he’s staunch and sticks to business, but he also considers himself honest and fair. Unfortunately for Andrew, he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he keeps a secret about himself and Grange.
With Grange now on the loose, the threats are piling up against Andrew and the danger so great that if forces Clay to take Andrew into hiding. Andrew’s sister Mary becomes a danger to herself in the process, and he now has to take his young niece and nephew under his care. Even though Clay has a lot of the Carlisle Police Force in his corner, he takes Andrew, Auburn, Duane and Petey deeper into hiding where Andrew and Clay start to form a relationship. But, can it hold together as the threats keep coming and Grange gets closer?
Fire and Granite is another suspenseful and tension filled installment in the Carlisle Deputies series. The plot has plenty of danger and suspicious characters along with two sweet kids and a cute dog. Besides struggling with dangerous situations, Clay and Andrew have a growing chemistry and decisions to make about their relationship. Clay has no question in his mind that he and Andrew could make it as a family, but Andrew questions himself on the situation with his niece and nephew and what it would mean for their future. There’s also the contrasts of dysfunctionality in Clay’s and Andrew’s families, but there’s one very important thing that Andrew learns: there’s an amazing camaraderie with the Carlisle deputies and cops. He gets to meet Red, Carter and many others, and their partners and the families they’ve made along the way.
