Blurb: A fight for what’s right becomes a fight for his life.
As guilt plagues him, Matthew Elliott’s world begins to spiral out of control. The harder he holds on, the more it slips through his fingers, and he’s helpless to stop it.
Entering into the underground cage-fighting scene, he starts out fighting for what’s right. The deeper he gets, the more guilt consumes him – the more pain he takes for his penance – and he’s soon fighting for more than justice.
He’s fighting for love.
He’s fighting for his life.
Review: Matthew Elliott is a detective. He is better than good at his job, but despite his best efforts to stay in the background, his innate skills as a detective have kept him in the public eye. When his lover, police trainer and self-defense expert Kira, was kidnapped and tortured at the hands of an insane drug dealer, Matt finally snapped and outed himself to his colleagues and the entire city to rescue his lover and the wives of the three fellow detectives that make up his squad.
In Breaking Point, Matt retires from the force and gets involved with the world of MMA fighting and its darker, underground fighting counterpart, where he slowly realizes that lying to himself, to Kira, and to friends old and new, is not as easy as he thought it would be. In fact, it could get him very dead.
Sean Crisden returns in book two and takes us deeper into Matt’s world. Lies, secrets, and more give this book a surface tension, and Crisden delivers it in such a powerful and lyrical way that you are left wanting to know more. He even manages to make sign language Dad jokes funny.
As Matthew gets deeper and deeper in the world of MMA and his home life starts to implode, you can feel Crisden’s delivery slowly ratcheting up the tension level. There is a full cast of characters in this book, and Crisden gives each of them a voice all their own, including Kira’s irascible but loving mother and his deaf father. The ring trainer at the gym is another of the great voices in this book, and Crisden manages to convey a whole raft of emotions with very few words.
Turning Point is a three book series. The world here is expanding its scope and the cast of characters, but it is also becoming more insular as Matt’s cop world becomes the MMA fighting gym. The closeness of the settings allows for more tension to build, and Crisden’s lovely voice is very right here.

Book two picks up just a few months after book one ends, so you may want to read/listen to book one first to be up to speed on the story so far.
