Blurb: Unearthing the past brings them closer together…and to danger.
A maniac is on the loose in London, drugging young women and assaulting them before burying them in shallow graves.
When Inspector John Cordiline asks Jake Chivis for his unique assistance as a Fire Elemental with the Cemetery Rapist case, he feels he can hardly refuse. What begins as a simple job—trying to get memories from a suspect to aid conviction—soon takes a darker turn when one of the victims dies and an offer of help comes from an unexpected and unwelcome source.
Dr. Mari Gale is disturbed to find that his former lover Tomas Arregui is London and wants to meet with him. Despite his best efforts to avoid the man, fate seems to be pushing him onto a collision course with Tomas. And the impact will cast him into more trouble than he could ever have imagined.
Digging deeper for the truth could be the death of them.
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of non-consensual sex, murder, graphic violence, desecration and description of confined spaces.
Review: Mari is beside himself with concern over the cancer that is in Dr. Annabel Gale’s blood. She is still looking for a magic cure and has made an appointment with another consultant, Solana Stellara. Mari does not hold back his feelings on this new consultant; as far as he’s concerned, most have been frauds and only interested in the money while never finding a cure for Anni.
Jake, meanwhile, has been asked by Inspector Cordiline to be a consultant to the police department, in the horrific case of young women being buried alive in the cemetery. For Jake, the case takes him back to his own assault, which he doesn’t want to remember. But he comes face to face with his violator, who claims he can speak with the dead.
Mari is also facing someone from his past who destroyed his confidence and left him with the belief that no one would ever love him. And just when you think things might become a little more normal for Mari and Jake, that past comes back with a vengeance.
One thing I have to say is that the writing team of Quinn and Bermingham keeps taking the elemental powers to the next level. This plot is dark and gritty, and the abuse is beyond horrendous and is a major factor in tearing down a growing trust between Mari and Jake. Even though they take a big step in their relationship, along with a new profession for Jake, there’s still a crack in their bond. The authors make it difficult, and I want both Mari and Jake to find that peace and trust for their relationship become more solid.
I also had mixed feelings about Anni. When she revealed Mari’s secret to Jake, I felt that this was Mari’s secret to share. Jake seemed to understand but again, it weighs on the trust factor in their relationship. I also didn’t feel comfortable with Solana Stellara; I became very suspicious of her, but I’ll hold off on my judgement and see if she makes an appearance in the next installment.
The whole premise of the elemental powers captivates me and makes me wonder what other powers will come into play. The mysteries are twisted, and the plots are riveting and deal with dark secrets and situations. Elemental Evidence is an amazing series, and it continues to pique my curiosity! I highly recommend this fragile and dangerous world of Mari and Jake’s.
