Blurb: Spoiler Alert! The following blurb contains spoilers for Cash Plays, book three of Seven of Spades.
Shattered by their devastating breakup, Detective Levi Abrams and PI Dominic Russo find themselves at war right when they need each other most. While Dominic is trapped in a vicious cycle of addiction, Levi despairs of ever catching the Seven of Spades. The ruthless vigilante’s body count continues to climb, and it’s all Levi can do to keep up with the carnage.
When Levi’s and Dominic’s paths keep crossing in the investigation of a kidnapping ring with a taste for mutilation, it feels like history repeating itself. Thrown together by fate once again, they reluctantly join forces in their hunt for the mastermind behind the abductions.
But the Seven of Spades hates sharing the spotlight, and they have an ace in the hole: a new batch of victims with a special connection to Levi. Their murders send shockwaves through Las Vegas and change the rules of the game forever.
The Seven of Spades has upped the ante. If Levi and Dominic don’t play their cards right, they’ll end up losing everything.
Review: After Dominic and Levi’s breakup, the Seven of Spades is back and causing more chaos and committing more horrid murders along with manipulating the Avispones gang, but Dominic and Levi are playing with fire as they both still find themselves drawn to each other—and their emotions are in danger of exploding. Dominic is still dealing with his gambling addiction and denies that he needs help. Levi is dealing with his anger issues and has sought out counseling, but I can’t say it’s helping. Along with the anger, he’s become a stalker of sorts when it comes to Dominic. Levi has eyes everywhere, and it’s only causing more animosity between them.
Seven has left fear and different opinions in the minds of others: that Levi is the Seven of Spades, or, if any harm comes to Levi, Seven will kill that person. Seven also pulls out all the stops with a belated birthday surprise for Levi. Dominic has taken on an intriguing insurance fraud case and when missing persons and murders are involved, he and Levi have to put their personal issues aside and team up to solve this twisted case. Not only is One-Eyed Royals an excellent read, but it’s action-packed, explicit and violent; it’s gritty, gory and jaw dropping!! And just when you think you know both Levi and Dominic, the tables are turned. Not only do Levi and Dominic shock each other, but anyone who follows this series will be shocked too! The Seven of Spades-Levi-Dominic triangle becomes more ominous as Seven issues a horrendous ultimatum. Will Dominic or Levi be able to make the final decision?
In Cash Plays I was disappointed in Dominic, but Levi takes disappointment to a whole different level here. When their lives are on the line, Dominic’s thoughts hit home. I don’t think Levi really understood what Dominic has faced: “Dominic sometimes wondered if Levi ever thought about what it meant that Dominic had been a Ranger…if he ever considered the things Dominic must have done in eight years of war, or if he ever asked himself how many men Dominic had killed.”
Martine, Leila, Stanton, Carlos and Jasmine are all a solid support system for Dominic and Levi, no matter their problems. Rebel plays a big part in this novel, and we get to see her in action. She’s a big asset to Dominic. This line from Dominic says it all: “Let me rephrase, what I’m saying is that I will not allow this to happen. If you attempt to leave this room with either of these men, I will kill you. If you harm either of them in any way, I will kill you. And if by some miracle of chance my shot misses, my dog will tear out your throat.”
In closing, One-Eyed Royals took on a new meaning for me, and I’m not even going to attempt to speculate what Cordelia Kingsbridge has cooked up for the final installment, A Chip and a Chair.
