Blurb: Dominic Ramos is a Premiership football player with a secret. There are no trophies for being gay in his game. Locked into his rep as the meanest defender on the pitch, keeping his secret is soul-crushing, but love has no place in his sport, even if his soft heart craves it.
Lucky Coleman is on his knees when he meets a man with more money than sense. It’s a Grindr hook-up for cash, not a love match, but dreaming of his desperate, kind eyes earns a place amongst his numerous bad habits.
Meeting once was risky, twice pushes Dom’s courage to the limit. Losing Lucky seems inevitable, but his tight grip on his image counts for nothing when Lucky starts to fall.
Catching him could cost Dom everything, but if he can set his heart free, getting Lucky long term might be a risk worth taking.
Review: Anyone who knows me or follows my reviews at all knows that Garrett Leigh is one of my absolute favorite authors. I’ve read twenty-one of her books and reviewed sixteen of them, this being the sixteenth, and though I haven’t five starred every single one of them, it’s pretty damn close. She consistently writes books that grab me and hold me from start to finish, where I’m invested in the characters and am enthralled by whatever space in the world they fill. Her newest novel, Lucky, is no exception. I was sucked into both Dom’s and Lucky’s lives from page one, and loved everything about them together.
Dom is a Premier League footballer (soccer player for us Americans 😉), who is closeted, quite lonely, and desperate for human connection. At least, whatever connection he can get while slinking around paying Grindr hookups for anonymous blowjobs. Lucky is mostly homeless and very lost. He’s been homeless since he was a teen but spends as many nights as he can at his best friend Jamila’s house, pretty much whenever her mom works nights or is away. The other nights he sleeps rough, and sometimes abuses a variety of substances in order to get through the tougher nights. Desperate to start saving some cash so he can turn things around for himself, he decides to try offering blowjobs for cash on Grindr, and Dom is his first customer. Lucky (heh) for him, Dom is not the fifty-year-old creeper he was dreading, but instead, is young, fit, and unbelievably hot. What he doesn’t know, though, is that his new customer is Dominic Ramos, super tough Premiership defender.
As I said, I LOVED these guys together. Not only were they on fire together physically, but they were also incredibly sweet to each other. And, their relationship is extremely hard-fought. Dom has everything to lose if he’s found out, and Lucky has secrets of his own and things to work through, but they quickly come to realize that life is so much more worth living when they have each other. Aside from the use of one conflict device that I hate, the dreaded ‘I need to end things for his own good’, I loved how Leigh moved these guys forward. Dom is so closed off and tortured, but Lucky begins to break down his walls a piece at a time, and Dom eventually starts to feel like a safe haven for Lucky. Their romance evolves so beautifully.
The supporting cast was also great. Isha, Dom’s agent and one of his only friends, kept me guessing a bit. I adored Jim, the owner of the garage where Lucky gets an apprenticeship as a mechanic, as well as Micah, another Premiership player Dom trains with a couple times a week up in Manchester. And, of course, there is also Jamila as well as Cash, who works at the garage with Lucky. We know we’ll see Cash again, his book comes out in January, but I hope to see the others again as well. I will definitely be surprised and very sad if Micah doesn’t also get a book.
I’ll stop the fangirling there. Go get this book. It’s so easy to fall in love with Dom and Lucky. They are so good for each other, and SO sexy, I know you’ll love them too!
