Blurb: The only path to happiness is freedom: the freedom to live—and love—as the heart wants. Claiming that freedom will take all the courage one young man has… but he won’t have to face it alone.
In small, conservative Sierra Pines, California, Reverend Gabriel is the law. His son, Willy, follows his dictates… until he meets a man in Sacramento, and then reunites with him in his hometown—right under his father’s nose.
Reggie is Sierra Pines’s newly appointed sheriff. His dedication to the job means not flaunting his sexuality, but when he sees Willy again, he can’t escape the feeling that they’re meant to be together. He’ll keep Willy’s secret until Willy is ready to let the world see who he really is. But if going up against the church and the townspeople isn’t enough, the perils of the work Reggie loves so much might mean the end of their romance before it even gets off the ground….
Review: Sheriff Reggie Barnett has been relocated to the small town of Sierra Pines, California. He’s been appointed by the California Department of Justice to head up what once was a shoddy sheriff’s department that had more than lost its funding, and he’s taken on a new crew: a rookie, a deputy who gossips and is jealous of Reggie, and a drunk. To add to the problems, he also has to deal with Reverend Gabriel Thomas, who the town’s leaders and citizens seek guidance from. The small town has very biased views of gays, wild teens who disobey the laws, and suspicious goings-on at an infamous rest stop.
Reggie loves the relocation that took him away from the big city, but when he wants to let loose, he goes to San Francisco or Sacramento. It helps him stick to his one rule—to not get involved with anyone where he works. So, he’s off to Barney’s in Sacramento to relax and enjoy the company of his old college friends. When a young man enters the bar, he piques Reggie’s curiosity. Reggie picks up on the familiar nervousness he experienced the first time he’d walked into a gay bar, so he comes to the man’s aid. Willy joins Reggie and his friends and at the close of the evening, Reggie gives Willy some much needed advice.
When the mayor’s sons get into trouble and wind up in jail, Reverend Gabriel shows up to plead their case with Reggie. When the discussion is over, Reggie escorts the reverend out and spies Willy waiting. Reggie is surprised to find out that Willy is the reverend’s son, but they both keep their senses and don’t reveal that they’ve already met. Reggie and Willy start out as friends, and Willy shares his secrets, fears, and how difficult it is for him living at home with a father who has changed. As they become comfortable with their arrangement and friendship, things become serious and they both have to examine their life choices. Reggie’s also been dealing with the strange occurrences at the rest stop and while trying to help, Willy finds himself in danger. Reggie has to put his life on the line for Willy and hope that his crew has his back.
This novel was entertaining and a nice change of pace. The MCs’ portrayals are in-depth, especially Reggie’s. He’s strong, reasonable and doesn’t let anyone intimidate him. The relationship that develops between he and Willy has many important factors. Willy is six years younger than Reggie, and because of his upbringing, he has made up his mind to experience life. He’s never had any serious or physical relationships, and he doesn’t want to hide anymore. Reggie, at twenty-eight, is worldlier, has had a serious relationship that failed and has had his share of hook-ups. Both Willy and Reggie want a physical relationship, but will it be just about sex, or can it lead to something more between them?
In Andrew Grey style, he delivers another well-written, easy read, with drama, danger, humor and a heartwarming relationship.
