Blurb: Olle Svensson came to Canada to play hockey, but now he’s wondering if twenty-five is too late to start university back home in Sweden. Things started out well, but then his friend Jamie gets caught with a guy in a men’s room stall at a random bar. Olle knows he should have stood by Jamie, in the bar and the locker room, but he’d been caught off-guard. He’d thought…well, it doesn’t matter anymore what he was thinking.
Jamie Gallagher is in hell. He’d been sure none of his teammates went to that bar, but now he’s been outed against his will and doesn’t have a single ally on the team. He’s giving serious thought to giving up on hockey until the Moncton Ice Cats come to the rescue. Jamie never thought he’d be so happy to be traded.
The only down side is that Olle is coming with him.
Review: Continuing on my little Samantha Wayland reading binge, I grabbed her newest novella, Traded Out. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything I’ve read of hers, which have all been in her Moncton Ice Cats ‘verse in some capacity, so when I saw this one revolved around two players being traded to the Cats, it was a no-brainer. I do think it’s worth mentioning this quickly, though…I’ve seen a few other readers saying that this one perhaps doesn’t work entirely as a standalone, and I would be inclined to agree with them. The main characters are new (and really lovely), but I think this story is probably much more enjoyable if you know who all the secondary characters are. Fans of her other books will love seeing Callum, Rupert, Alexei, Mike, Chris, Tim, etc.
The story starts out with Jamie heading to a meeting with the GM of the Edwardston Eagles, the minor league hockey team he plays for. On the way, he runs into his friend and teammate Olle. A friend, that is, until he quit talking to Jamie after he and most of the rest of the team walked in on Jamie giving a blowjob in a bar bathroom. Jamie figures Olle was disgusted right along with the rest of the guys, so when he finds out that he and Olle are both being traded to the Ice Cats, his elation at being traded is diminished by the thought that a reminder of his mistake is going right along with him. But, what he doesn’t know is that Olle wasn’t disgusted for the reasons Jamie thinks, and it’s no accident that they’re going to the Ice Cats together.
One of the things I really liked about this story, besides how sweet Jamie and Olle were together, was seeing what Rupert and Callum are really building with the Ice Cats. That they wanted Jamie not just because they needed a winger but because they knew Jamie was in a bad position with his team after being outed. And, that they wanted Olle because they looked closely enough at all his penalty minutes to see what was really going on, which was that he was protecting Jamie. I love how much all the guys respect and love playing for them. And, the camaraderie on the team is both adorable and at times hilarious.
