Welcome, Layla!
Food Battle – San Francisco v. Boston
In Craft Brew (Trouble Brewing #2), our heroes, Cam and Nic, travel from San Francisco to Boston, Cam called home for a family emergency and Nic called out to help him crack the cold case that drove Cam to the FBI. It wasn’t until I was editing Craft Brew that I realized how often food appears in this book. It’s almost like I set up a San Francisco versus Boston food battle. So, let’s play it out and see which town wins!
Round 1: Breakfast
Boston – Dunkin’ Donuts – And no, I’m not dropping the Donuts part, because what else would you be dunking in your coffee? Cam makes no secret of his DD love, demanding a visit each day in Boston, like a man who’s been in the desert deprived of water (and who doesn’t realize—and Nic doesn’t tell him—that a DD recently opened in the Bay Area). Only when Nic goes missing while out on a DD run, does Cam contemplate giving up his favorite breakfast food for good.
San Francisco – Whiskey Special – Technically, sausage gravy and biscuits is a Southern dish, but with Cam’s best friend Jamie Walker living in the Bay Area now, I’m calling it for San Francisco. It’s comfort in bowl when Jamie, who’s in Boston investigating with Cam, offers it up after a long night of grizzly case research.
Round 2: Lunch
Boston – Clam Pie – As case work continues, Cam and Jamie dig into a New England favorite, Clam Pie. A white pizza heavy on garlic, onions, red pepper, fresh mozzarella and topped with cockles steamed in white wine. Baked to crispy on a thin crust, it’s a salty, savory snack that’s perfect for lunch or an all-nighter.
San Francisco – Sushi Burrito – Food trucks are as popular as ever in the Bay Area, especially in the City, and one of the more popular options is the sushi burrito. All the goodness of sushi wrapped up in seaweed or rice paper shells, handheld, burrito style. Nic’s a fan, grabbing one as he and Assistant Director Moore discuss the the troublesome case of Nic’s estranged father.
Round 3: Dinner
Boston – Guinness Beef Stew – One of five kids, Cam learned to cook at his Southie mother’s feet. It’s a welcome surprise to Nic when he comes home from San Diego to a crockpot full of the savory Irish stew. Unfortunately, his enjoyment is delayed a few hours when a suspicious fire breaks out in the apartment unit above his.
San Francisco – Cioppino – Nic’s mother died when he six, and shortly thereafter, Mary came to live with them, to care for Nic and the household. As a San Francisco native, one of her specialties is Cioppino. A fish stew that originated in the Bay Area, Cioppino is an Italian-type tomato-wine soup, incorporating the catch of the day, together with other local shellfish—Dungeness crab, clams, squid, mussels, etc. Whatever is fresh and in season, usually right off the docks, and served up with toasted sourdough slathered with garlic butter.
