Blurb: It’s all fun and games until someone leaves a dead body on the floor.
Life for comic book store owner Alex Martin usually runs to the mundane. Sure, he has a regular influx of geeks and freaks, but for the most part, it’s a familiar weird. That all changes when he opens up Planet X Comics one morning and finds a corpse in the middle of his shop.
When Detective James Castillo is called in to investigate, Alex is torn between wanting to climb the man like a tree and giving him a wide berth. Luckily for Alex, the handsome detective is just as interested in him—as a suspect in the murder.
Review: Rhys Ford’s Cops and Comix is the story that introduced Alex Martin and Detective James Castillo, of the Murder and Mayhem series, back in 2014, and also gives readers their first peek at Alex’s “cousin”, Rook Stevens, who features in that series.
Since this is a short story, I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say that Alec is the owner of Planet X Comics and also deals in valuable collectibles. When, unfortunately for him, dead bodies start piling up, it ends up being lucky too, because the murders also bring James into his life—the detective who not only has an interest in the murders but has a thing for nerds as well, and Alex fits that profile. The big question is, with the murders and resulting dead bodies, will Alex and James ever have a moment of peace?
Besides creating an entertaining mystery, Rhys Ford introduces two interesting characters who have great chemistry together. Cops and Comix gave way to one of the best mystery series in Murder and Mayhem, which not only continues to bring Alex and James onto the scene, but it gave us two more wonderful characters in Rook Stevens and Dante Montoya, along with the cranky Archibald Martin. It’s been too long since Tramps and Thieves released, and I’m itching for the next installment to this great series.
