Blurb: Mystery. Murder. Men in silk stockings. Hollywood nights are heating up.
Hardboiled Los Angeles PI Cain Noble is hired by wealthy and gorgeous Camille Astor to find her husband and a priceless work of art, both of which have disappeared.
At the nightclub owned by Mr. Astor, Cain encounters the mesmerizing Lily Lavender, who has the body of a goddess and the sultry voice of an angel—but is really a young man named Riley who attracts trouble like a magnet.
What’s a private dick in the vein of LA’s bygone era and a cross-dressing burlesque starlet to do when faced with the hidden decadence and lethal dangers of the Hollywood Hills? They have their work cut out for them because they haven’t even scratched the surface of an elaborate scheme more twisted than anyone could ever have imagined.
Review: Cain Noble is an expert PI in Los Angeles. He’s got an addiction to sweets, gummy bears and honey, that help to keep his low blood sugar in check. When a beautiful new client comes to hire him to find her missing husband, Cain is perplexed by his attraction to her. When the investigation doesn’t pan out, Cain decides to visit the nightclub, Iris, which the missing husband owns.
Cain becomes even more confused when he catches the first show with Glam Vamp. The reaction he had when he first met the client hadn’t added up, and when the sultry and seductive Dark Lily takes the stage, Cain once again finds himself perplexed. Then Riley Lavender comes into the picture, with more than one secret, and no matter the attraction between him and Cain, Cain has to be careful. Cain and Riley find themselves mixed up in murder.
Femme Faux Fatale is my first-time reading Susan Laine, and I was not disappointed. This is a fast paced, action packed, page turner, with descriptive fight scenes and a complicated mystery that brings missing statuettes, diamonds, and even the Nazis into the mix. I love the modern day classic 1940s feel that this novel has. There are lots of classic movie lines and music references, and, of course, a sultry nightclub singer. Even though Riley has his secrets, the chemistry between him and Cain is humorous and steamy, but Riley’s got one seductive secret that never crossed Cain’s mind, until he gets up close and personal with Riley. And there are all kinds of suspicious characters that throw Riley and Cain off course.
All I can say is that this was a fun and enjoyable read!
