Blurb: After the hard winter of 1888 ended Alby Boyle’s work as a Nebraska ranch hand, he returned to New York City in search of his long-lost family. His mother and brothers are nowhere to be found, however, and after Alby’s years of absence, Five Corners no longer feels like home. His prospects seem as dim as the nighttime alleys.
When Alby pauses to admire an angel ornament in a department store window’s Christmas display, he meets Xeno Varnham-Summerfield. Wealthy, handsome, and enthusiastic, Xeno brings Alby some temporary cheer. But for Alby to achieve his dreams of love and a real home, well, that may take a bit of holiday magic.
Review: I loved this story. As implausible, fantastical and so easily resolved as it was, this was a delicious romance from beginning to end. Alby returns to his poor roots in the suburbs of New York to find the family he was forced to leave behind some seventeen years before. Having no luck, and finding the tenement he was raised in burned to the ground and replaced with a new building, Alby finds himself adrift in the city with limited means and no serviceable job skills that would see him hired on in any decent establishment. So when he nearly steps in front of street traffic and is saved by the handsome Xeno, his life begins to change. Xeno comes from wealth, and Alby is in no way worthy of his attentions, but Xeno has a mind of his own, and a beautiful angel that sits perched atop a shop window display may have a hand in bringing these two men together.
Oh my, Kim Fielding has done it again and married together two improbable men who both are just looking for someone to love them. Alby is so adrift, with a back story that will melt your heart. He is looking for his home and the two brothers and mother he had to leave behind due to a court order that took the young man away from his family and settled him, finally, in Nebraska and made him a rancher. But fate was not done with Alby, and so when disaster struck the ranch, Alby chose to leave, to return to New York. When he meets the impossibly happy Xeno, who has no qualms about pushing societal boundaries, Alby is smitten.
What follows is a romance that only Ms. Fielding could create and make plausible despite the magic and mystery surrounding it all. How this happy ever after unfolds is just delightfully sweet. If Summerfield’s Angel doesn’t put you in the holiday spirit, I dare say you are beyond hope, for this is a wonderful story of new beginnings and realized dreams.
