Blurb: There is freedom in blacking boots for the right man.
Jake: Kings of Hell MC Prospect. Obedient. Desperate for approval.
Vars: Dominant. Stern. Undead.
Jake is itching to become a patched member of the Kings of Hell MC.
For two years he’s toiled as the only prospect. So when a new guy swans in and thinks he’ll get a patch in no time just because he’s got friends in high places, Jake is there to stand in his way.
Only that the guy is older, more experienced, drives a Harley, and has the kind of boots Jake craves to lick.
But he won’t.
Because he only fucks patches.
Vars is ready to find a new home in the Kings of Hell MC after a messy relationship led him straight to hell. In comparison, the pretty, blue-eyed prospect could be just the pleasant rebound he needs.
The boy is a brat, but that could be amended with a firm hand and a gag.
If only Jake was ready to admit to his submissive needs, Vars would gladly take him under his wing.
That is, until he finds out something inhuman resides inside of Jake.
Vars didn’t cheat death only to call out to it again.
But stuck together in one room, keeping each other’s secrets, they might just have to become allies, no matter how unwilling. Because if there is something Vars can’t resist, it’s a boy with pleading eyes.
Review: I think what has struck me most about this series is that it is so well written I have just accepted this alternative reality as being perfectly real. There is a brutality about this world that K.A. Merikan has created which is juxtaposed against a band of men who are so bonded on so many levels with each other. And the weirder it gets, the more believable it becomes. This is not a standalone book. To really understand Jake, you have to have seen his interactions with the other club members from book one. You would also be totally lost as to the paranormal aspects of the story, if you don’t start from book one. Heed the warnings on these stories. They didn’t mark it morally ambiguous, demons, and horror for nothing.
On Your Knees Prospect is the story of Jake and Vars. This book is a May/December romance between an undead Dom and our favorite submissive prospect. I will admit that Jake’s character in the preceding books is rather innocuous. He’s a submissive on a level that few people truly are and as such, he tends to get taken advantage of. The men of the KOHMC have gotten into the habit of having Jake around to do anything from shine their shoes to suck their cocks. He’s the perpetual pledge, the prospect that is caught in a limbo situation of thinking that he has to do EVERYTHING that the patches tell him to, regardless of his own personal safety or human decency. I’m not sure that Jake got, a full apology from certain members as to the way they have taken him for granted for years and that bothered me. All I have to say is, “Way to go, Gray, for sticking up for our boy here!” And speaking of Gray, book four is all about him and a creature from the other side of the mirror named Shadow….
Vars is a special kind of creature. He’s undead, killed by his former submissive (?). Dying will go a long way to clarifying for you just what you want out of your actual life. Vars is a good guy who now works for the demon who brought him back to life, and he’s having to make some tough choices. One thing he knows he wants, and never thought he could have, is a submissive who NEEDS him for everything, and Jake is that guy. Jake is a submissive who needs someone to NEED him. Oh, and the gargoyle that lives inside him.
The story is filling in and some of the questions from earlier books are being answered; there is a larger picture emerging. The players on this chessboard of a story are finding their homes and the bigger picture, the overarching story which has been driving all these random events is starting to unfold, and I really appreciated how many things got clarified in this book. Only thing is, getting a glimpse at the future makes you want to know what it is just that much more. K.A. Merikan is known for their great writing style, and this book is no exception. The book paces well and there is nothing extraneous to this plotline. There is a point to all these things that are happening, and we are building to some kind of crescendo. I’m just not sure what that is yet. These books are page turners, the read all the way through in one sitting kind of books, sitting there being half horrified and half entranced and all the way engrossed. The KOHMC is in deep with the entity on the other side of the mirror, and circumstances keep happening that continue to make them even more beholden. They want out but at this point, how do they make that happen without losing all they have worked so hard for?
The entire MC make up the secondary characters in these books, and I already have an affinity for some and not others. Seeing the previous couples from the first books in the series and how they have moved on from their moment of crisis is great, even though I didn’t remember Elliott being such a petulant little shit. This book ends the same way the second one did, with a little snippet scene about Beast and Laurent. It’s a light, romantic way to end a book with some heavy themes, and I hope that the authors continue it with all the books in the series.
And look for Easter eggs! I found a few. If you are at all familiar with K.A. Merikan’s collective works and have read their stories, you will find them too (watch for the rotten apple… ha ha!) And that cover, amazing job, Natasha Snow! I highly recommend this series but again, it has to be read from the beginning. These are not standalone stories, but you won’t regret it. Just plan a long weekend and go for it.
