As their friendship deepens, Ewan finds himself questioning both his own identity and the nature of his feelings for Alex. But is it too late for a second chance at love?
Review: If the title of this novella has you pondering whether its story is as sweet and homey as it sounds, the answer to that would be a definite yes. Grandad’s Cup of Tea is a quiet and gentle story, a reminder that love, and falling into it, is not the sole province of the young. This is the story of two men who discover that a second chance at happiness in plenitude can be found in the most unexpected person. And, that timing is everything.
This novella first appeared in an anthology entitled Snow on the Roof, so you can infer the theme of the collection from its title and apply that to the two gentlemen in this story. Ewan and Alex share a common connection; they are both widowers and are facing their senior years day to day, navigating the process of moving on alone after so many years of togetherness with the person they each imagined growing old with. Alex’s grief is fresh, as he’s grappling with the recent loss of his husband when he and Ewan meet in a most charming way. It’s clear that both men are lonely, even though Ewan himself is surrounded by family since the loss of his beloved wife a few years before, and their growing acquaintance flourishes through understanding and over the morning cups of tea they begin sharing together.
Amy Rae Durreson tells such a lovely and uncomplicated story of hope and happiness in these pages. No extremes of emotion, no dramatic episodes or simmering angst, just a sincere and heartfelt story of two men finding one another and then embracing the years ahead they’ll share together while discovering the sweet indulgence of holding hands in public and enjoying the anticipation of sharing new moments and memories with each other.
