Blurb: It’s the day before the last day of term and Year One teacher Harry Britton has a problem: all of the costumes for his nativity play have been destroyed by accident. The only person who can possibly help him is Edward Saunders, who runs a small tailor and alterations shop in the village.
Edward is more than a little shocked to be asked to make seventeen costumes for five year old children—he’s more comfortable making bespoke men’s suits. But there’s something beguiling and utterly charming about Harry Britton, so despite all his hesitations, he agrees to help.
Review: I have always loved Anna Martin’s storytelling, and it’s no secret that I love Christmas stories, so when I saw she had a new Christmas book coming out, I pounced as fast as I could. And I’m glad I did, because Let It Sew was a cute little shot of holiday sweetness. I actually didn’t realize it was only thirty-something pages when I pre-ordered it, but although I do wish there had been even more of the story to enjoy, I think the author mostly nailed the shorter length.
Harry is new to the small village of Little Wetherill, so he isn’t sure where to go when he finds himself in emergency need of costumes for his class for the Year One Nativity at St. Michael’s school. Luckily for him, the woman at the fabric shop points Harry to the local tailor’s, where the owner, Edward, takes pity on him and agrees to help with the costumes. Edward, as it turns out, is a village native, who went to St. Michael’s himself, and knows what a big deal the Year One Nativity is. It also doesn’t hurt that Edward is a wizard with design as well as sewing, and, with Harry’s help, he whips out the needed seventeen costumes.
As they work together late into the night, the two begin to get to know each other, and over the course of several hours and a shared meal, it’s obvious that there is interest there. Edward is charming, and Harry is taken with his cozy home and nice eyes, and he isn’t the only one who is instantly smitten. Edward also thinks Harry is lovely and is fairly certain he feels the signals being returned.
Let It Sew packs a big amount of charm into a small amount of space. I loved the small-town vibe, the sweet camaraderie between the two guys, and the cozy holiday feel. I do wish there had been more, however. A bit more character development, and more relationship development for sure. That being said, I still really enjoyed the snippet; Martin did a nice job wrapping up the storyline in the space she had. I do recommend this one for a cute, quick read!
