After returning from the frontline in Europe, all Emmanuel Jackson wants is to find a little peace. Unable to cope with life in New York, he escapes to the homestead his grandfathers left to him in Nebraska. Except, after four years, the sleepy town of Lastford isn’t exactly how he’d left it.
With many of his neighbors forced out by financial hardship, and a ruthless businessman taking full advantage of the fact, Emmanuel finds himself being drawn into matters he’d rather avoid. One of them being Asher Franklin, his childhood tormentor and unfairly handsome officer of the law.
Having to fight his attraction to the man he once hated, as well as defend the community he wants to make his own, is far from the quiet life Emmanuel had envisioned for himself.
But some things are worth fighting for.
And when there’s no fight left in you, love might be the thing that brings you home.
Review: Fans of Alex Jane’s Alphas’ Homestead series will appreciate this sentimental return to the Nebraska setting and the cameo appearances of some of its best loved characters. There is also a bit of bittersweet to tease the tear ducts in the remembrance of two of its most beloved Alphas, which all comes together to deliver a sweet enemies-to-lovers romance.
Emmanuel Jackson has returned from Europe a changed man. His time as a correspondent on the frontlines in World War I has left a few tragic memories to grapple with, but it’s the return to his grandfathers’ land in Lastford, Nebraska, that provides for more challenges than he’d bargained for. Manny’s goal was simple—to find peace and solitude in the place where he’d collected so many of his fondest childhood memories, and to reconnect with two of his favorite uncles, Ephraim and Jacob. The last thing he expected was to find his family’s town succumbing to the greed of a swindler. Or, that he would end up becoming its savior.
Alpha Asher Franklin’s presence in the story provides for the tension on the romantic front. He and Emmanuel have a history, Asher being the nemesis and bane of Emmanuel’s childhood existence. Manny bore the prejudice realized in the belief that he was lesser than others in the pack, and Asher made sure Emmanuel knew he’d never amount to anything as a non-wolf. This comes to bear between them when they come face to face with each other for the first time in years, and those old hurts stand between them. What Emmanuel will discover, however, is that a child parroting a parent doesn’t necessarily carry over into an adulthood of prejudicial ideas. Asher is no longer his father’s son, which allows Emmanuel the opportunity to learn who Asher is now rather than punish him for who he was then.
The aim of The Legacy is to offer readers a heartwarming story of love and redemption, and in that it succeeds. While I don’t feel it quite plumbs the depths it could have in terms of Emmanuel and Asher’s past and the bond they’ve discovered now, there is enough there to allow for an emotional connection and investment in their HEA. Alex Jane achieves a lovely sentimental and romantic balance, offers her characters a believable reunion and a chance to find love, and has left me looking forward to more stories in this -verse.
