Blurb: The last thing Jeff wants is to spend time with the man who totaled his car—the one he spent years restoring with his late father. But if he wants to resurrect his childhood town’s annual outdoor hockey tournament, he’s got no choice.
The last thing Mika wants is to work with the guy who took off right after the accident, without ensuring he was okay. And working together on organizing Jeff’s proposed tournament sounds like a complete nightmare. He’s got enough on his plate after surviving cancer.
Sparks fly as they’re forced to work together, but is that enough for them to set their differences aside and pull off the tournament in only two weeks? Or will they prove to be immune to the magic of Christmas?
Review: Sweet, sweet, and sweet. Amy Aislin’s Gingerbread Mistletoe is like a sparkling heart shaped Christmas treat for everyone who loves to watch a budding romance build against the backdrop of holiday magic.
The town of Lighthouse Bay, Maine, couldn’t be more Hallmark movie setting if it tried, and it creates the perfect scenery for Jeff Bellmoor and Mika Jones to fall in love in this enemies-to-lovers story. Aislin sets aside the traditional meet-cute and introduces Jeff and Mika to each other at a time when they’re each feeling low, vulnerable, short-fused, and not at all in the romance frame of mind. Cue a year later, introduce a heaping helping of coincidence to them meeting again, and the scene is set for a little close proximity—in the form of their working together to make the holidays bright in Lighthouse Bay—along with a heaping helping of chemistry, some delightfully charming courting, and, eventually, the compassion and understanding that was missing from their first meeting to bring them to a place of forgiveness and new beginnings.
There is a paranormal-ish twist added to the story, which offered just that little bit more sweetness and wonder to its telling, along with some issues—namely, overcoming the past, and considering how a long distance relationship would work, if it would work at all, but they are all met with the conviction that love will find a way, keeping the tension mostly at bay and allowing readers to simply bask in the bliss of knowing Jeff and Mika have not only found the person they will spend the rest of their lives with, but they have reconnected with their roots and now have a home with, and in, each other.
The cast of additional characters in the story rounds out the town and provides the support system necessary for Jeff and Mika to be able to deal with their individual concerns, and also nudge their romance along accordingly, including Holland and Zach from 2018’s Christmas Lane. And unless I’m much mistaken, Aislin has teased readers with who the next couple will be to find love in Lighthouse Bay, which I’m already invested in just from their appearances in Gingerbread Mistletoe.
Did I mention this book is sweet? Yes, I did, and yes, it is, as sweet as the dollop of whipped cream on a hot cup of cocoa. If you’re in the mood for something heartwarming and delightful, and for watching a couple of forty-something men recall a joy they thought was gone for good, you’ll find that in its pages.
